This is for all of you Elite fans out there. I came across this extracted stuff from a Russian site this evening, that appears to have a reworked version of Frontier First Encounters with updated graphics.....

>>>LINK<<<

I'm going to download this tomorrow and have a play to see what it's all about...

Edit: Do I spot Geraldine on that site.....??

Yes, I am a Space Sim Fan

Yes, I am a Space Sim Fan

You do indeed Merlin :)

Space Sim Central is full of useful info with all things related to the genre. There are quite a few game devs on that forum too. New members are always welcome, especially so if they are miggy owners ;) Lots of info about Pioneer (Elite 2 re-make) there too.

FFE3D was going great for a while with update after update, but of late things have gone a bit quite from the Russian guys who created it. Hope they come back to it.

Another site is of course the Official Frontier Forum, the number one topic (as always) is Elite IV or rather the lack of it, here a link to the lengths some of the members will go to "encourage" the game's development http://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=1851

Geraldine,

Have you taken a look at Oolite? That is a highly advanced remake of Elite that looks superb on modern machines, with full-on textures and skins for ships. There are a load of add-ons for it too - I love the loan-shark Monks that you can add to the game; just don't borrow money from then though!

It iz teh r0xx0rz!!

Open Source Space Sim Games

Open Source Space Sim Games

Oolite

Oh yes Merlin, Oolite been on my PeeCee's hard drive for quite some time now. The game has recently been updated to version 1.74.2, plus you have a wealth of add-ons (like the monks) as oxps. Here is a link for Oolite for those interested Linux and Mac versions availble too ;) http://www.oolite.org/download

Orbiter

If you like your space simming a lot more hard core, try Orbiter, tons of add-ons for that are available too, here is a link to that http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orbiter_%28game%29

Ascii Sector

We like retro things here right? Here is a little game called Ascii Sector that has simple functional graphics and involving gameplay and is surprisingly addictive http://www.asciisector.net/ Lots of quests available for that too

Privateer

Privateer Gemini Gold is another open source re-make of this classic game, available at the SSC, here is a link
http://spacesimcentral.com/downloads/ft2.php?dir=/Privateer_Gold

And Finally Pioneer

I have all ready posted a link in another thread on Amibay, here is a link to save you digging (post number 15) https://www.amibay.com/showthread.php?t=10143&page=2

Have fun! (y)

Hmm hmm
FFE3D is quite buggy and crashes a lot, so Merlin hit that save button a few times during play.
But it gets quite good when you have the Thargoid ship :D

Yes it can be Buzzfuzz. It seems to run fine on some systems, while others seem to have difficulty. I can't run it in windowed mode for example. The only res that works for me is 1280x1024. Anything else and the icons disappear.
If all else fails there is always good old GLFFE available here http://www.frontierastro.co.uk/Hires/hiresffe.html

Alpha 8.1

Alpha 8.1

Yes very good Andy, but sorry, I beat you to it, note the title of my introduction post from way back in August last year, although I didn't think anyone noticed https://www.amibay.com/showthread.php?t=8246

Sneaky or what!?! :p

And yes, thanks for pointing that out. Tom Morton's GL Frontier is well worth a go. Did you know he (along with John Jorden (of JJFFE fame) are the lead programmers of Pioneer?

This has also seen another recent update (8.1 Alpha). This just keeps getting better and better. Even organic ships are starting to make an appearance. Details here on the new Alpha http://www.spacesimcentral.com/pioneer-f35/alpha-and-new-lead-programmer-t1759.html

And for details on the current developments of the ship models (and other things) have a look here http://www.spacesimcentral.com/pioneer-f35/completed-models-for-pioneer-t1101.html and here http://www.spacesimcentral.com/pioneer-f35/modeling-for-pioneer-t1009-195.html

I should point out though, that these threads are a bit on the big side

I might have guessed that you'd be way ahead of me where Frontier is concerned. I'm not used to meeting people who are bigger fans of the game than I am! ;-)

FFE3D Update

FFE3D Update

Hi Folks
A new exe has been released for FFE3D. It fixes some of the problems relating to the fonts as in up to now it would occasionally use the wrong ones. I am not sure what else it does, here is a link http://spacesimcentral.com/downloads/ft2.php?dir=/FFED3D

I've tested it and it runs fine, but always backup your old exe first just in case!

There is also a rumour that the source code used in FFE3D will be released soon too. So if anyone fancys having a go at finishing this great game, or even adding new things to it, they will be able to do so. If I find out more I will update my post ;)
