So over the last few months I've got a nice collection on the go.. 3 A1200's 4 600's and an immaculate 500 (are they supposed to be badly made tea colour?) along with a plethora of power supplies and sundries...

I've got my main 1200 that I use as a work horse but I think its an Escom?!?! It basically refuses to run games from a floppy. Has an ungodly white case and the case badge is "Amiga" with a red dot over the I... Also it's a 1D4 rev motherboard and came with 3.1 ROMS so I'm guessing its an Escom :( I've tried another floppy but it just plain does not work! I've not opened the other 1200's but they all have commodore badges so I'll assume they are commodore machines.

From my sparse description can anyone confirm my suspicions of the Escom roots of my main 1200?

If it is an Escom its got to go (I want a Commodore Amiga) so I'll have to swap it for one of the other 1200's but I've heard about timing issues with non 1D4 boards and ACA accelerators? Also I've added a Indy to it and I'm a bit worried about taking it off.. It fits tighter than...well, a tight thing that's going to break when I take it off.

Any advice the pro's can give will be greatly appreciated :)

Doesnt really matter, escom or commodore. They just used random boards on a day to day basis.

From your description it is defiantly an Escom, only difference as far as I know if that they had to make a small change to the motherboard to use a non Commodore PC type Floppy drive which means that some games will not work. I have heard that this change is reversible so you can use a Commodore Floppy, but when I had my Escom A1200 I tried this mod but could not get it to work!

Only other difference is the case badge, but that can be changed with a Commodore one if you want it to look like a C= model.

I have always preferred the C= logo to the Escom Amiga Technologies one.

By the sounds of it your is definately Escom.

I just got a C= 1200 top case to replace my Amiga Technologies top case. Anything to get that C= logo back!

I remember reading about the floppy drive in the Escom Amiga's not working well with games, can't believe they released it into the market with that flaw at the time.

Escom or C= does not matter (I personally prefer Escom), if your FDD does not work replace it with some Chinon FZ-354

I remember there being a big scandal the first Christmas Amiga Technologies released their version of the 1200 as there were significant compatibility issues... seem to remember my mate who worked at Gordon Harwoods said return rate was about 50% and was pretty much he final nail in the coffin as regards dealers stocking them... im not sure what the cosmetic difference is between the machines, but the kickstart roms should be branded one way or the other.

Really.. no reason to ditch because of a logo mismatch or whatever.. get an FZ-354 as stated earlier or better yet.. consider a GoTek drive and use USB sticks to mount & boot the floppies in ADF format.. makes more sense to me if you like to use the machine.
