Folks,

I bought a CompactFlash set (4GB card and IDE) that was prepared by AmigaKit and installed it all fine. I thought I'd be clever and try and change my Workbench to Classic Workbench Lite. I took the CF card out and put it in my reader on to my laptop. Windows went I don't recognise the card, shall I format...I accidently went "yep". Now it's FAT32 and 1 whole 4 GB partition.

I got a real A1200 with 3.0 ROMS and I need handholding through the process of getting this bad boy up and going again? Any kind soul wanna talk me through it...I'll be honest, the guides are getting kinda complicated for me.

Ultimately I'm trying to archieve is, a nice classicWB install with a nice draw with WHDLoad in it with all my games.

Gimme a couple of hours and I'll write up a basic guide with some screeen shots since this comes up a lot.

Hopefully it'll help some peeps. I'm keeping it very basic though as I tried to write one before taking into account file systems like SFS and large HDD support, there are seperate 'advanced' guides for things like that already.

I'll start a new thread in AmiOracle and link it here when I'm done.

Steve.

Okay,

simple way, just before I ninja-off to make dinner for the wife and child -

1. attach the CFcard to you Laptop
2. Load WinUAE
3. Make a profile that has a setup classic workbench
4. Load that profile and add the CFcard in the Harddrive menu
5. Boot the Amiga.
6. Navigate to Tools >> HDToolsBox
7. edit the HDTools Icon (with right click)
8. change "SCSI_DEVICE=scsi.device" to "SCSI_DEVICE=uaehf.device"
9. Save changes and exit
A. Load HDTools and allow it to scan the (UAEF) bus
B. Upon finding your CF adapter you need to click Install
C. ignore any negative numbers and click OK
D. Select Partition Harddisk
E. Create partion(s) on the CF adapter, make the first one bootable (dont change prioity)
F. Save and exit
G. Reboot when asked
H. upon reload foramt the new device parition (lets call it CFH0:)
I. Open a CLI window and type the following
Code:
copy system: ALL CFH0:
J. Press enter and wait for the system to copy over completely.
K. You should now exit from WinUAE and then unplug the CF card and test it in the Amiga
L. Upon a successfull test you should then install the WHDLoad games.

If you get to point L. give us a shout and I will continue on with that.

I will recommend that you give your Workbench a minium of 512MB of partition space. then use the remaining 3.2GB of space for Games. You will need to remove both duplications (AGA/OCS) pending on your platform as well as the non-needed language version.

Also keep an eye on CHIP only versions as if you have FAST ram you should really plumb for these.

Hope that lot helps.

hi gents,

I cant see my CF harddisk in HDtoolbox even after the SCSI uaef change. Any ideas why? I added it as a hard disk and can see it on the 'desktop'. Also as I'm on 3.0ROMS, can I even have a 4GB hard disk or do i need to split it into partitions?

Hi!

Do you have a Workbench Install Disk?

You could format it in the A1200 then WinUAE should see it without any issues.

Don't forget to change the Max_Transfer to 0x1FE00 when you are partitioning or else you will have read errors later on, you'll need to check the advanced options box to see it. Afrer you enter 0x1FE00 you must press 'enter' it it will not be saved.

For your CF to show up under WinUAE you may also need to run as Administrator. I know in old versions of WinUAE you needed to add -disableharddrivesafetycheck to the startup shortcut to 'exe' file.

Not sure if this is still the case in newer versions though.

You boot partition must be under 2gb, I think 512mb is enough, I keep mine 250mb to be honest.

Then the rest as 'games' however this is where things can get complicated (hence my guide troubles) I's suggest not having >2gb partitions with FFS file system because you can run in to troubles, if you are staying with FFS file system I suggest:

Sys: 250mb
Work: 1.5gb
Games: 1.8gb

As I say - I don't want to over complicate things at this point but if you want to use a >2gb partition I would suggest SFS file system, however I'd save that step till you've mastered Zetr0's simple steps.

All the best,

Steve.

cheers steve.

I'm at my amiga now and put the drive back in. Fired up HDToolbox (i've got Workbench 3.0 not 3.1). The only option I've got in HDToolbox is Change Drive Type. What should I be selecting here?

right after a bit of messing about I think I have partitioning sorted. Only thing is, now i take the CF out and put it into my card reader on my laptop and I cant see the contents :(

How to I do about getting ClassicWB installed from here?

Of course, Windows cannot read the Amiga file systems this is why you need to use WinUAE and emulate an Amiga to do the work.

From here you are ready to follow Zetr0's guide

But but I want Pictures, nice pretty amiga themed ones plz, it also be cool if there was a frog or a guinne pig on one or 2 of them :)

Ah the joy of setting up a CF card, fear not it shall be fixed in the end Zetr0s guide will do nicely for you apart from the maxtransfer settings that steve added ofc
