i bought a neo geo control pad at replay in anticipation of buying a neo geo console from paulie on this very forum, plugged it in last week for the first time and the stick wont work, only a couple of directions work, can hear the microswitches click but no movement on screen, all buttons however are fine.

anyone ever taken one of these apart? is this a common fault with these controllers and is it an easy fix?

Not taken it apart, but a repair of the micro switches looks like it could be fairly "simple" if you have the time.
HERE
That's of course as long as the micro switches even resemble those ones at all. ;)

cheers for the link, just had a reply from the chap i got it off and he's going to sort it out in the new year which is really good as i did buy it over a month ago now.

prob best to leave him to fix rather than me, (last time i tried to fix something i accidentally smashed the glass on my ipod touch)

got my pad back from the menders but its still not working properly :( shame really as it only cost xxx so was a bargain, now to find another one,

A better link for that forum is HERE as it appears they have moved.

It's not one of these Joypads is it?

it is one of those pads, i also watched a youtube video on how to take them apart and clean too, so thats the next plan of action.
