Hello Folks,

I have a 500MB Quantum SCSI drive that my A2000 complains about "read errors" once it gets to a particular spot on the drive.

I can install WB3.1 on it without trouble. The issue arises when I install software and finally write to a certain part that is apparently bad.

Is there any software that I can use to repair (or mask) these issues?

Thanks in advance,
Mike

Hi there,

I have similar problems with my Conner 1080S! Has anyone an idea?

When it comes to hard drives though, I tend to have the opinion that when bad sectors start showing up, it may be prudent to replace the drive with a new one.

You could try low-level formatting it, I use an Adaptec 29160N on a PC for such purposes.
If the low-level doesn't get rid of the errors and you can't/don't want to replace the drive, you could always spot the defective cylinder and partition the drive such as said cylinder falls into non-partitioned space.

On a PC within the Adaptec boot menu there is also a media defect checker.

"Verify Disk Media — Runs a utility that allows you to scan the media of a hard drive for defects. If the utility finds bad blocks on the media, it prompts you to reassign them; if you select Yes,those blocks are no longer used. You can press <Esc> at any time to exit the utility.
"

I can't check HDTools or HDInstTools, my amiga is in bits.

Bad_format (Aminet) can cope with any defective HD or floppy. Other than that, I strongly recommend you to use Quarterback Tools to check and mark the bad sectors after the OS installation.
