A few uses on AmiBay (myself included) recently lost money on a couple of trades to a user by the name of "rocco2007". I’ve just received an email from Northumbria Police confirming he was arrested this afternoon and has fully admitted the offences.

Result!

Wow, that rather pleases me

These fraudsters don't realise that this site has teeth and that we go after unscrupulous people who try to rip our members off.

This is a brilliant result and should serve as a deterrent to others who may want to try their luck in scamming our members.

This is good news. I guess you could now take him to the small claims court to get your money back?

Only worth it if he owes you a lot of money though as there is a court fee.

I think once he is convicted its a simple matter of a civil case & he would have to pay for any court fees & other costs incured as you would enter these on the claim form (which can be filled out online)
but this does not mean he will pay up.
So its pay up or get a CCJ but in my experience these people couldnt care less about CCJ's etc as they usually have messed up lives anyway!

I copied it to News and Announcements as a sort-of marker, so that the copy would hang around more than the original thread will and wouldn't get pushed down over time by other posts in General Chat.

That, and the fact that members can't post in News and Announcements as it's a staff area, which is why I left the original for member comments.

It was a good idea in my head, anyway...

Excellent , result :-)

My bro paid for an xbox360 in 2007 for £lots ,that was sold I think ten times on a popular auction site.

He gets £3 most months or did the court doesn't enforce it now as the crook can't afford it.

I think he's had about £16 in total...

The long arm of the law.

Lol what a joke. Sadly the criminals have it waaaay to easy with our laws :(

I expect that this is a better result than had the same occurred on a certain other site! That's why I feel a lot better off buying over here.

Nice work, guys.

The other bay dishes out full refunds under the buyer protection scheme if that is the other site you are referring to? You pay a premium in fees to have that though so it's either take your chances here or give them money for doing next to nothing over there.

I think anyone who ever had a police case as a victim will agree with me that the police is not there to protect or give justice to you individually. It's there to protect society in general. That is, to try deter other would-be criminals to commit their crime by punishing those who are caught. The justice system operates similarly too. Therefore criminals always have a great advantage over one individual in a specific case, as the victim always have more to loose.

Best you can do is hope he'll at least be punished. Most of the time there is no remedy. At least this is my experience so far.

If you don't pay by "gift" on Amibay, you still get the same level of protection as the other bay. The difference on here is that we will pursue scammers on Amibay, and will do our best to ensure that the very least that will happen is that they will be reported for attempted fraud.
Having had the misfortune of having difficulties on the other bay myself, I can assure you that you will not get the same level of personal assistance from the other bay that we deliver here.
We cannot guarantee that everyone will be fully refunded outside of the T&C's of your chosen payment method, but we will do our best.

^ This sums up what I would've said, completely - I was just a bit late in returning to the thread, haha. ;)

Elsewhere, refunds get handed out and the perpetrators are 'allowed' to get away with it to an extent. They tolerate them, pretty much.

The difference on here is that we don't tolerate it at all and we will do our best to hunt them down, as these people are scumbags.

'Merlock Holmes' and his team of detectives are always on call if needed.

Good news - glad to hear it! Hate scammers, had a friend on the Swedish "bay" who got scammed last year by some a-hole!
He had to go through quite a process with the whole thing and the police couldn't or wouldn't do much in that instance.

Even if individuals don't get fully refunded every time at least the criminal gets trouble and maybe it acts as a deterrent and makes other low-life think twice.

Did you ever find out if he actually had the items in question in his possession or had he simply just copied pictures from Woldemortbay or some other auction site?
