I have amassed a fair old amount of kit over the years, and unfortunately, the vast majority of it lives in the attic in a selection of old cardboard boxes, bags, and a couple of plastic storage containers.
I've just spent a sweaty hour dragging it all down so that I can catalogue it all properly, sort it all out and get some appropriately sized containers to put it all in.
The idea being that every box will have just one system in it, with all it's games, packaging, cables and peripherals. On this case will also be an inventory of everything that's in that box.
I like the plastic storage containers, as they are light, strong, stackable and easy to move about.
Once they are all sorted out, I want to be able to just grab the systems we need for events and know that everything is in there, tested and ready to go.
I would also ideally like to move it all into our garage for ease of access, and to free up a great deal of space in the roof.
Temperature, and moisture is going to be a problem here, has anyone got any grade A tips about keeping the kit running well?
I'm planning on grabbing a big pile of those dehumidifying crystal packs and liberally filling the cases with them.

Was just about to suggest those silica gel packs as I got to the last line of your post!
Few of those in each container should keep the moisture away nicely. I wouldnt worry about any other extremes provided these containers have lids, and if theyre anything like what I have in mind, they do. (I have something which is similar to what you're describing for under the bed storage).

i keep toying with the idea of vacuum sealing the stuff i dont plan on using for quite a long time (ie duplicate items)

I keep it all in plastic boxes, silica gel and in my air conditioned storage container which my project car currently resides in :)

Nice dry steady 22 degree environment for my beloved possessions :P

Most of my stuff is in the dining room lol, a mess of Consoles and Computers everywhere but at least its dry

Ha! I'm the same, I have all my miggies currently scattered liberally across the lounge/dining room. Then again, I live in a flat. No loft, no basement, no garage.

Plastic storage boxes seems like an excellent solution to storing stuff in lofts/garages. I especially like the silica gel touch. :)

Nice Steve, that'll be my house when I finally move out, lol.

i use an old cornflake box kept just outside my kitchen next to where the cats like to toilet:)

That could possibly explain the reliability problems you used to get, and the strange smell as well. :D

It's a possibility.
Although if you were to keep your kit in an airtight temperature regulated vault, have them serviced by the finest electronics technicians wearing environment suits in a sterile laboratory, the moment you switch one on it would go boing.
So you might as well leave them in a cat piss soaked puddle.

Yup, youd do all the above only to get it out one day and find battery leakage :D... Typical...

The cat pee may actually help with that... :p
