Since signing up to Amibay late last year I kept meaning to obey the ever-annoying (but completely justified!) requester, telling me to post in the 'Introduce Yourself' section.

So, here I am.

I've been an Amiga user since 1990, and it was my main machine up until 1997/98 when I moved over to the PC.

I struggled to shake off the Amiga love, and around 2000/2001 I put my A1200 in a tower, installed 3.1 ROMS, and OS3.9.

Unfortunately, I kept experiencing invalidated disks, so not long after that I stopped using it.

Fast forward to 2010, and someone on the EAB is after full versions of shareware games. I had two - Beetle and Mr Numpty. Thanks to the patience of this person it transpired that I had my boot partition set too large, so a quick change of that and the transfer rate and the Amiga's been stable ever since.

I've currently got the A1200 networked up to the net and my Mac (the PC got ditched years ago), and the Amiga's used a few times a week.

I'm currently trying to learn AMOS, and am wondering if I should be spending money getting my 1942 monitor fixed (it keeps going green), or should simply scour the net for a working monitor instead.

Err, I think that's it :)

Welcome :D
Good work on digging out the games, and well done on getting the maxtransfer and partition size sorted: it's hugely frustrating to get this working right.

As for monitor: the 1942 is a good choice of monitor if you're using both classic resolutions (15KHz horizontal) and the newer productivity modes from the 1200, but it might be difficult to find someone to fix it. What's the symptoms? Failed power switch is common and easy to sort, failed flyback transformer is common and less easy to sort!

Other options would be to use a scart monitor lead on any TV, or to go for an indivision AGA, or other scandoubler, which converts the output to something that can be displayed on pretty much any VGA monitor... There should be a new batch of those indivisions in a month or so. Not really many downsides to that providing you get everything set up right, but you may see some tearing if you want super smooth scrolling. Mind you, my "600Hz (yeah right)" tv can't get that right either!

Welcome.

AMOS Pro (I suppose you've got that one) is a powerful BASIC language and easy to understand. Not all of them has this neat 1942 monitor, so in my opinion? Yes, it's better to got it fixed. :)

Welcome to AmiBay! I sincerely wish I still had my old 1942 monitor. It was such a perfect fit for my A4000. If you can find a place to get it fixed then it might be worth doing.

Good luck!

Heather

Thanks for the nice comments.

The 1942 flickers between green and full colour, but once warmed-up it's fine. This, though, can take anything from 5 minutes to many hours.

I think it's a dodgy capacitor, but I could be wrong.

I'm tempted to give the local TV repair guy a ring and see if I can get a quote.

At present I'm using an RGB Scart on a CRT. It looks lovely, but still not as good as a monitor.

Re: AMOS - I'm using AMOS Pro, and having fun tinkering.

Definitely one for a local TV repair guy if you know one - it's definitely worth keeping if you can get it cheaply fixed. I've still got a 1940, although that's currently out of service as I'm using the 1764 :)

Hi
Welcome to Amibay :) I had a 1942 also and was constantly trying to keep it going until it too expired forever. It was a great monitor. One of the best ever made for the Amiga in my view, so clear it was and great for messing around with DPaint , so yes keep it and get it fixed!

Mind you, those big LCD TVs look very good these days too via RGB/Scart.

Hello and welcome to Amibay , I cant say ive ever used an Amiga on a monitor but I have used plenty of CRT & LCD tv sets and recently watched an amiga with a Phillips monitor (retro replay) and.. It looked superb

So if the 1942 is as good as that was with vibrant colours I would get it fixed, even though I have a pathological hatred of anything CRT usually.

I just hate the size and weight , anything that gives you large melons when being carried is not good!

Mike.

Hiya from a crazy demo fanatic in Devizes/Wiltshire!

I'm located in Bristol if you'd like me to take a look at your monitor.

I replaced the flyback on my CM8833-II recently - hopefully the green screen issue might be a dry solder joint somewhere. I had purple screen issues with my Philips and the connector on the monitor just needed resoldering as the stress of many years' worth of unplugging/plugging had cracked the solder.

Does the green screen flicker back into colour if you wiggle the cable?

Beetle! I loved that game! Wish I had got the full version at the time.
Do you know if it has been made abandonware?
