Hi there,

Just stumbled on this site a few days

I had an amiga 600 many years ago but it got broken!

I'd now like to buy an amiga for my retro gaming collection.

Where is the best place on this forum to post a query asking about the best amiga to buy for somebody new like me getting back into the scene?

Thanks again.

The forum looks great so far and I hope to go as far as making a purchase!

o/ Welcome.

The best place is the Want to Buy section https://www.amibay.com/forumdisplay.php?f=33

This is just my opinion but for the best amiga retro experience I would recommend an A1200 with a modest memory upgrade such as a 4 or 8mb. (stick with 4 if you want to use pcmcia)

With that machine you could run
http://classicwb.abime.net/ Classic Workbench with WHDLoad (allows running of floppy games from hd)

Which has loads of apps and whdload preloaded and then get some game packs
http://kg.whdownload.com/kgwhd/index.php

All these things can be loaded to a compact flash drive or laptop ide drive from a PC running WinUAE amiga emulator.

Thanks TheoryBoy,

Definitely sounds good!

Pardon my ignorance but I have a few n00b questions.

You you say ememory upgrade I presume you mean ram?

If that is the case then does the amiga 1200 come with a hard drive installed as standard or would I have to seek that as an extra?

Does classic workbench allow the running adfs from the amiga hard drive?

Thanks again, I'll probably have more questions before I make i post in the Want to Buy section if that's ok!

In my over simplified understanding WHDLoad is sort of like an Amiga Kickstart emulator and with modified game images (which are already prepared by contributors to WHDload and hosted on kgwhd in alphabetical packs.)

Quick rundown on classic workbench here
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WyFpPll91gU&feature=related
WHDload related info starts around 6mins in.
The games can be started from the menu programs that are brought up the game .

Yep with the A1200 I mean Ram expansion. AKA Trapdoor upgrade etc.
Harddrives are easily sorted and even compact flash drives (from cameras etc) can
be used as harddrives with simple cheap adaptors. Even if the Amiga came with a harddrive is should be upgraded to either 2GB or 4GB drive which will allow you to
nearly install all the available games/demos for the amiga and make them available through whdload.
I should mention that while wdload is included with Classicwb you get best use out of it, if you register it, its very cheap for what it does and one of the best programs for retro amiga use.

You can use an A600 or A500 also but memory or harddrive expansions are expensive or difficult to come by.

Thanks TheoryBoy,

Would you mind helping me put together a shopping list for the want to buy section??

So it sounds like I will need:

  • Amiga 1200 (good working condition)
  • 4 mb memory (RAM)
  • Hard drive (preferable but not essential)
  • Mouse
  • Joystick (not essential)
  • All leads, cables, PSU (Ireland/UK power)
Anything else? If I don't get a hard drive with the machine I would need to investigate hdd installations or other options at that stage.

Thanks again man, appreciate it! :)

Welcome,

Seems like you've got a good understanding of what you need. A 030 is nice to have on such a setup, and will commonly also allow for more RAM.

Thanks guys, any idea what sort of price (pounds or euro) that I could expect to pay:
including hard drive/storage solution
excluding hard drive/storage solution

Just as a guideline.
Thanks again

Price guides are not allowed on here as it's considered price driving. But researching online auction sites etc you will get an idea what things are worth to you.

You will probably have to do it in 3 stages.
Get an Amiga
Get a harddrive solution, most popular are 2 or 4GB compact flash cards and adapter or/and cable
Get a memory upgrade.
Then register whdload when you feel you have reached the limit of what the demo can offer.

If you need help setting up a harddrive/cf just pop a question in AmiOracle or pm if you want.

Thanks TheoryBoy and Kin Hell

That all sounds good. Totally understand regarding the price driving - I didnt even think about that when making the original post!
Sure I might get as well make a post on the Want to Buy section and get this amiga ball rolling!!

Thanks for all the help so far! :D
I'll probably be back looking for more advice if I get as far as making a purchase

No worries TF.

Just remember to state your interest in the thread, for the item you are interested in & then talk money matters via PM.
It keeps the thread sweet & doesn't clutter the Forum with numbers that could be used for price driving.

All the best.

Kin

@Technofreek

Well, advice and support is what we are all about here, with a little extreme hackery thrown in from time to time.

You should check out the Photo Booth section for some serious hardware pr0n; we likes our hardware pr0n, we does...oh, yes...

Tis done, Kinnie.

  • Hard drive (preferable but not essential)

Welcome :D

Harddrive is essential when you are going to play games on a 1200.
I can't imagine you would like to swap floppy's all the time ;)
Better solution is to add a compact flash adapter and compact flash card.
And for the easy transfer an Easy ADF kit from Amigakit is also handy.

Preferable items also include a monitor and maybe even Indivision AGA for the 1200, but these are hard to find these days (high demand).
