Hi all,

I’m a lapsed Amiga fan looking to get back into the community :)

My computing journey started with a Commdore Plus 4 around 1987, but things really stepped up in 1989 with my Amiga 500 (the Batman Pack!) along with a mighty 512KB RAM upgrade to take it to 1MB RAM and a Cumana external floppy drive. I then moved to an Amiga 1200 (Desktop Dynamite Pack!) in 1994.

So began an expensive upgrade addiction that saw me add a Blizzard 1230 IV + 4MB, Microvitec Multisync monitor, Overdrive PCMCIA hard drive and Mediavision Reno external CD-ROM (using a clock-header based SCSI controller as I recall?).

Around 1997 I caught the tower re-housing bug that was popular in the UK-based Amiga magazines at the time, originally transplanting the 1200 into a Micronik Infinitiv case and later moving it into an Elbox Power Tower. My final set of upgrades saw me add a BlizzardPPC board running a 603e @ 200mhz and 68040 @ 25MHz + 16MB, a BlizzardVision graphics card and a Catweasel floppy interface.

I found it harder to justify clinging on to my Amiga around 1999/2000 given the shrinking state of the community at the time (plus being a poor student!) and ended up selling the whole thing to a chap in Scotland. Whilst I’m glad he got the use of it, I regret doing so now and wish I’d kept it all.

Since then my computer journey has taken me through the PC market, home building, various iterations of Windows, then Linux and in the last 10 years I’ve settled myself nicely in the macOS / iOS world.

I still think fondly of those times with my Amiga. I purchased a boxed and un-upgraded A1200 a few years back (currently in the loft!) and dabbled with Amiga Forever and Amibian running on a Raspberry Pi last summer after I first came across Dan Wood and his Kooky Tech videos on YouTube.

A genuine high point of my computing life came recently when my daughter (5 years old) sat in front of that Raspberry Pi, picked up the mouse and started doodling using a Deluxe Paint V demo version. It felt incredible seeing her doing what her Dad had done over 20 years earlier.

So for now I’m back in the community courtesy of Amibay! I have a Micronik Infintiv keyboard I’ll shortly be putting up for sale, the only hardware remnant of my original time with the Amiga.

My ultimate aim is to buy the holy grail of Amigadom that I only dreamt of as a child - an Amiga 4000 :D

Nice to virtually meet you all and looking forward to contributing.
