Hey guys/gals

Seeing as I do like RPG's I thought I would check out guild wars. Seems pretty fun, just wondering if anyone here played? I don't have anyone on my friends list that seems to play. Anyone want to team up at some point for a laugh?

Cheers

I am an avid World of Warcraft player and 2 years ago I dabbled in other MMORPG's. I liked Guild Wars but there are others that you might want look into that have gone F2P now.

Lord of the Rings online is still pretty good and is F2P but Runes of Magic made me quit WoW for a year :)

Runes of Magic is worth looking at for sure. Awsesome game, a bit like WoW and Guild wars combined with stunning graphics and it's 100% playable without spending a dime.

Let me know how Guild Wars 2 turns out though, always interested.

I played Guild Wars 2 for a while, which is radically different from the original Guild Wars.

The original was Korean only for a long time and has more of an isometric look to it, if I recall. Never played that though.

Guild Wars 2, on the other hand, is really not that great. It's yet another MMO where you spend your days grinding through, killing dogs and cats and bees or whatever the creatures were, leveling up along the way, for no apparent reason.

Then again, if that sounds like fun, have at it!

I second what BritishGeek said. Lord of the Rings online is really nice, and it's free.

Mind you, it's the same old same old. You grind through, killing forever to reach higher levels with no end in site, BUT, you get to do it in middle-earth.

When I played, I could care less about fighting. I picked the burglar class with my Hobbit allowing me to use "stealth", that way, I could sneak around enemies and just travel around the world checking out places from the books that I always wanted to visit.

I highly recommend it.

I used to play GuildWars a lot. Played it from beta through to the release and continued for about 2 years, racking up about 1600 hours played in total.

I prefer the first initial game release and not the expansions (Factions, Nightfall etc) and tended to play though that more than them.

@Dr Who. Guild Wars 2 hasn't been released yet so how could you have played it? It's due for release later this year and the beta has only been announced in January for play later in the year.

Maybe you are confusing Factions as being Guild Wars 2? It was the first standalone expansion for Guildwars, not a sequel. Guildwars definitely wasn't isometric and you didn't need to grind at all in the game to progress, especially as characters are capped at level 20 and leveling is not important as the game is instance story based, nothing like WoW as you progress through the game by playing story led main missions to progress through the regions of the game, and side quests to progress within each area. The whole game is instanced so you don't get any other players in the game world, only within the hub towns.

I did like the NCPs for hire idea used in the game, so if you couldn't find enough real players to venture out of a town into the world you could just select from the range of NCPs currently standing in that town and go out alone.

The range of character types to play was also interesting. Favourites were the Monk/Warrior and the Necromancer. Although my first ever character was an Elementalist and really enjoyed that one too. He was called EmanRa.

However, after playing it for so much and completing it right through the main campaign PvE story 4 times with different characters I moved on to other games.

Currently playing Star Wars: The Old Republic as I've mentioned elsewhere and highly recommend that to everyone. 100 times better than any MMO to date.

Very nice review of the game Harrison, was a pleasure reading that. I know you love Star Wars and millions of others do as well, but I still refuse to pay for a game then pay to play online. Main reason I decided to buy Guild Wars as you pay for the game and online is free as you know.

If Star Wars was priced at £80 then all the online content was free forever I would buy it, but I just refuse to pay monthly to play a game I had to buy as well. Many others disagree but hey just my view lol :p

It has always amazed me how they managed to release GW without a monthly sub, especially with their servers being so stable (at least back when I played it).

My favourite time in the game was when they had holiday events. They did ones for Halloween and Christmas and they were great. Free hats for players in the game when the events were running. I had a pumpkin head and a Christmas hat. And in certain towns things happened, where the developers would come online as special in game characters and perform events in the towns. The town world also be changed to the theme and the sky would alter too. I wonder if they still do that?

Regarding SWTOR. I understand people's POV over this. Why buy a game and then have to pay some more. However the amount of content in SWTOR compared to any other MMO is amazing. Everything is voice acted very well (a lot of well known voice actors from previous KOTOR and other games used - over 3000 actors I read), and the character PvE instanced stores are really good. I'm still playing my first Smuggler character in the game, now up to level 41, with a total of about 170 hours played, so for me that is value for money. It will be over 200 hours gameplay just for this one story. So playing all 8 character classes its potentially 1600 hours. And that doesn't include the space combat or the flashpoint multiplayer special missions.

Nope, it's even worse than that. I confused Guild Wars with Lineage/Lineage 2. I realized this last night while walking the dog.

My apologies, it's easy for me to confuse MMO's, since they are all basically the exact same formula, in my humble opinion: bad. :)

Then you should give GuildWars a play as it isn't like any other MMO. You don't have an open free for all world with everyone roaming around. You just have community town hubs. Everything else is instanced with only your own party playing in your version of the world, and the game is completely story led like a proper RPG. You can pick up a compilation of the original these days for not much money and there are no subscription fees. It's a few years old now so the system requirements are low. Looking at my box it says recommended PIII 1GHz. LOL so anything including an Android mobile is good to go!

+1 for Guildwars

I still have a few charachters in Blade of Souls guild..... lots of late nights getting titles... ohh... burned oneself out on that game a bit...

lots of fun with well developed teams!

but can be enfuriating when training noobs..... oh how they always learn the hardway.....

I have Completed all the games (Guildwars, Factions, Nightfall and the expansion pack - Eye of the North) lots of fun and really enjoyed getting into the role-playing of the characters, from the "Hold The Line", "Protect the Weak" mantra from my Warrior Monk to mentally disturbed Necromancer / Monk

lots and lots of fun...

I never really got into the PvP much in GuildWars. I know the name of the game implies that was always its main focus, but I just enjoy the PvE in most MMOs and am not bothered by PvP.

Although the Guild vs Guild PvP in each other guild halls was sort of fun.

To show how little PvP interested me, I've not even tried it in SWTOR yet.

I have to adimt, while I enjoyed the Guid V Guild side of the PvP, the basic PvP was not very rewarding.

The most fun I had was running noobies through areas with the guild, getting new characters up and exploring some role-play aspects of the character I created.

While the Game provided some great epic story lines, it was nice to flesh out the characters with a personality and a little bio history.....

LOL I even created Characters that hated each other and had a death rivally ... lots of fun to play...

It definitely is great to help new players through areas of a game. As it is equally great to find players willing to do the same for you when you first start.
