Hi All

I recently acquired as in the title a GVP Tekmagic 060 card without memory which sadly will not boot past a black screen.

I have tried various types of standard 72 pin Simm's and I am waiting for a new Oscillator in case it is that.

The board looks in great condition and I can see nothing obviously blown.

I know this is a cheek, but would somebody loan me for a couple of days a GVP 4mb simm to test in it or I will have to return it and lose the bargain of the century, I will make up for loan with a little gift :-)

Hope somebody can help.

AFAIR, you don't need to install memory to get the card to boot.

What is the revision of your A2000 motherboard?

From BBoAH:

In order you use this card you must be running at least Kickstart 2.04 and have a motherboard which is revision 4.5 or higher.

Also be mindful of the various jumper settings...

Hi All

Thanks for the responses, this is the board I have with an 060 http://amiga.resource.cx/exp/tekmagic2060

I have a rev 6.2 and 4.5 2000 board and same problem with both. I already have all of the settings and they seem fine.

I have a new Oscillator coming in case it is that but as it is a black screen that usually means CPU, but sadly I do not have a spare confirmed working 68060 and whilst I thought about putting an 040 in it then I do not have the roms.

In an ideal world I would try a GVP memory simm and maybe swap another working 060 to test.

If I cannot figure it out if somebody with the knowledge to repair it and wants a bargain I may swap for a fast 30 with ram. Or perhaps pay somebody to fix it?

Steve

I read that reflowing the soldering connections of the Altera chips might revive it. Supposedly the connections aren't great to begin with and the card can get flexed pretty easily when installing which can make matters worse.

That shouldn't be an expensive repair if you can find someone to do it for you. If it fixes it of course :)

Yup, if you speak or can read German do some searching on A1K.org, you will find that several got revived that way.

@clusteruk

Do you still need to borrow a 4MB / 16MB GVP SIMM ?

if so hit me up in PM my friend and we can sort out the details =)

For the record this after swapping out CPU it booted fine, however, now I am getting tekscsi2 errors on boot having to press resume for 56 times till boot, I am guessing it is termination or something but this happens with no cable connected and active termination on or off?

@clusteruk

I am pleased to read that swapping out the CPU solved the primary issue - its good see another one of these cards "back from the dead" as it were - congrats!

Now, if I am not mistaken my friend, the TekMagic cards can only use FFS from the Kick start ROM - using any other format like PFS or SFS will simply not be able to mount the disk device.

You can change / patch the FFS in the kick start since that is where the controller looks the for handler. I have read that some have had luck modifying the kick start to have either a patched FFS or SFS in the Kick ROM so that on boot it obviously allows for larger partitions and disk sizes to be used.

Did you try letting it run 5 min and then hit reset?
