That is very true, any knowledge my miggy's (or Amibay) teach me, I always pass it on to others. All I can say is thank goodness for the ability these days to upload high res pictures. Lots of the projects on here have been a great help to me. Inspiring too :)

Ask a lot of questions now, answer questions later.
ya gotta learn sometime, no?
Those that answer the questions here do so because they like that, don't deny them that little pleasure :D

Grtz, PymerOne.

Grtz to you too, my friend. You're absolutely right, that's what it's all about. This is the biggest reason why I hang out here at the 'bay, everyone is so incredibly friendly and helpful. Once upon a time, I was a newbie here and spent my days asking loads of questions. Now I give the knowledge I've acquired back to the community wherever I can, and there's definitely an element of "Oh, I know that! I'll post an explanation!" :-)

i agree with geraldine do it all on your pc with winuae and that way you can test them on there as well it is a lot easier and quicker m8y

Heh, I do think it's great that WinUAE exists, but for me, it just doesn't have the same appeal. For me, it's all about the hardware. If you haven't lemon-juiced an Agnus, swapped a Denise for a Super Denise or tried to fit a sodding great Fastlane Z3 into a Zorro slot, you haven't really lived :-)

Still, if you just want that quick fix, UAE is a magnificent invention and I respect those folks who use it to prep their CF cards for their real miggies. I'm just too hardcore* for that.

*When I say 'hardcore', what I really mean is batsh*t-crazy.

I had an issue with one of the ADF utilities that caused a lot of bad reads from my own disks that I were attempting to archive. I can not remember exactly how I resolved it though. I think I was using transadf or something similar. Perhaps a similar issue is causing bad writes?

Agree with Andy.... there is just something about installing a patch.... the system refuses to boot, resetting, holding down the mouse buttons, boot with no start up and typing the magic words "ed s:startup-sequence" to comment out the offending command and then trying to get it to work.

Nothing beats the satisfaction of having a stable, efficient and beautiful workbench that you painstakingly created, icon by icon...

WinUAE just does not cut it.

I reckon there is merits to both ways, I myself feel more at home configuring my miggys as they were intended to be, but sometimes, either through temperamental hardware issues or (more likely) a memory fail on my own part, At such times, Win UAE can be a life saver. At the end of the day, I just think about it just another AmigaUtility program. :)

i think if your miggy is causing you pain, then you should take it out into the garden and burn it:evil::twisted:

You still call ed from the shell? I normally type all the startup-sequence by hand (one command at a time) then I type LoadWB.:p

Of course I quit mounting the monitor drivers (the most boring part of S-S), I'm using LoadMonDrivers (Aminet), as it works on every Amiga I tried it.

You still Call Kickstart from rom? I wired on the front panel of an altair 8800 and input each bit by hand. Then I call the boot sector.

@ Andy / Abbraxious (and others)

It's called proper computing guys, it's real 'getting you hands dirty' with the hardware and no plug and play to bail you out if the proverbial hits the ventilation. It's like trying to set up old 086 and 286 PCs - there's just no substitute,

I love the real thing as well, it properly takes me back in time, something WinUAE could never do for me:)

I also like the idea of exploring software from 2 decades ago, like I suppose archaeology, exploring a lost world from my childhood, you get such a sense of where we have come from in such a short space of time to the modern computing world :)

I think these machines can run on yet, there is such an incredible wealth of technical knowledge on these forums it really is quite staggering what is possible . I think the Amiga community will never fail to surprise :)

I would do what others have recommended and simply pop it away for a few months until your enthusiasm returns. Sorry to hear about your troubles, I will be smacking my head against a wall when my life finally quietens down and allows me to play with my Amiga!!

ok I would just like to say thanks to everyone for their help and advice it is much appreciated. I think I have found the problem:).
I bought some HD floppy disks today and formatted them with X-Copy,transfered slam tilt onto them and they work fine, im pretty sure most of the 2000+ floppy disks that i have been chewing on with are knackered.

I have a new floppy drive from amigatkit.com so i kinda ruled that out, as well as a cleaning disk.

Hopefully i have found the problem thanks again.

Maybe when i get the cash to buy an accelerator card then i will start looking at some WHDLoad games.

Cheers.

Hey Mate,

Glad you've had a result

Now enjoy!

Steve.

One thing to watch out for is old and dirty floppy disks that leave crud on your disk drive. I got to a point where lots of disks were failing to format, but a quick clean of the drive later and I was back in business. :-)

Thanks, when i was looking at alot of the disks by sliding the metal plate over, loads semmed to have a kind of haze over them. Im just gonna bin them and buy some more new disks.

Seems a shame to throw so many Amiga disks out but if they no good then i suppose they no good.

Happy for ya mate

As for accelerators, of course they always pop up on Amibay but you could do a lot worse than the ACA1230 that came out recently. Its not that expensive for an accelerator when you also consider its brand new (from AmigaKit.com) or alternatively a Blizzard 1230 MKIV is amazing, Ive had a few of these and still have one, its a beast for what it is and perfect for WHDLoad machines

Dont forget to cover up the extra hole on the HD floppies :)

Be sure to store all your Floppy Disks in a secure location & well away from any Magnetic sources. I've seen users with them stacked in boxes along side their monitors, or sat on top of external CDROM/Hard drive enclosures. All that is happening to these disk's is unrecoverable destruction.

Cleaning your floppy Drive heads is important too. Some lint free pads & some Isopropyl alcohol based cleaner will remove any gunk of the Floppy Drive heads, but be sure to use a small amount of pressure & movement to save damaging the heads or misaligning them.

All the Best.

Kin
