Could you be a Hermes courier?

<EXCERPT FROM HERMES COURIER APTITUDE TEST, OR PERHAPS JUST WHAT HAPPENED EARLIER OUTSIDE MY FRONT DOOR>

You are a Hermes courier delivering a C64C in a small box. You arrive at the address and the intended recipient is not in. You look at the label on the box, which reads "can be left next door". Do you:

a. Leave the package next door, leaving a card?
b. Take the package back to the depot, leaving a card?
c. Throw the package over the recipient's fence onto the patio behind, notice the suspicious cracking sound and leave a card with "OVER SIDE FENCE" written on it?

If you answered:

a. Wait? This is an aural test! I thought we asked you already if you could read?! Security!
b. Close, but not close enough. Perhaps you would like to work for DHL instead?
c. Congratulations! You have what it takes to be a Hermes courier! Please pick up your recruitment pack on the way out. Be sure to mark the contract on the front. Any kind of mark will do. An "X", or just an inked fingerprint. That's fine. No... you did great. Maybe next time you could smash their windows as well. It's the little things that count!

I'd like to say "Unbelievable!", but I don't really think I can. :wooha:

At least tell us that the C64 survived!

The board is okay but the case was damaged. Lucky-ish, I guess. I got home, saw the card and thought "err... they wouldn't have just dropped it over the fence onto concrete would they?" Well, yeah. They did. :double

Hermes delivery, great for anything that isn't important, expensive or worthwhile...

I think I know where you may have gone wrong with this parcel. You marked it 'Fragile', but they don't see that as a warning, they see it as a challenge.

It's a bit like when you mark an envelope 'Photographs - Do Not Bend', then they go out of their way to prove to you just how much they can bend them. They might as well write 'Oh Yes They Do' on the package!

The cynic in me suspects that they do this deliberately, to encourage people to use more packing materials, thus bigger boxes, thus pay more to send the same item.

some folk just have no pride in offering good service... it's a bug bear of mine

This is no surprise. The first (and last) time I used them for a delivery, it was for a boxed C64 and 1541. They collected the parcel, then proceeded to tell P2G (not the buyer) it was left in a bin cupboard.

Problem is, the address was an office building, with no building, and a security gate, which unsurprisingly didn't record any deliveries that day.

That company must be run by a bunch of f***king flapjacks.

Give monkeys a typewriter, sooner or later they'll write Shakespeare.
Give em a transit van, and they'll be hired by My Hermes.

So, yep, rant completely understandable...

My 600 came via Hermes :
The Box was split in two places
But the Amiga was surrounded in
Inch Thick Poly, and thus Survived.

I've used Hermes numerous times for both sending & receiving and never had a problem. Not saying it doesn't happen but to be fair it happens with all couriers. Touch wood it never does happen to me though

When I sold a lot of my items recently here, anyone who bought off me would see the bullet proof packaging I used. I purchased industrial rolls of bubble wrap and double boxed everything.

when I pack something I pack it as if it WILL be dropped and try to prevent damage.

Ah well, it could have been worse. I've seen some of the horror stories when lurking on forums. I suppose I should be grateful that I didn't need to sweep it up.

I was amazed when I seen here on this forum a photo of an amiga 4000 or 3000 not sure what looked like wrapped in paper with gaps so you could see the insides, believe it or not when the buyer put it together it worked.

that was amazing.

I'm afraid I have to air my discontent with Hermes too and will never use them again.

After the recent episode where they destroyed an original mint A1200, today I received a package of two Acorn Electrons from my good friend bagpuss22

They were very well packed but at some point the package must have been subjected to a severe violent shock causing the power supply pcb to crack in multiple areas, the consequence being when I plugged it in it was severely overvolting and fried the ULA :picard

So no I will never use Hermes again and request any sellers I purchase from to use a different carrier....
Shame because for a while they were pretty reliable..

My neighbour works as a sub-contractor for Hermes and I'm sorry to say he has told me many things he's seen when he goes to the depot to collect his parcels.

When they unload lorries from the depot, they literally throw the packages off onto the floor. Maybe its not so bad when its clothing in plastic bags etc.. but he mentioned more than one occasion he's seen them literally throw large boxed LCD televisions out of the vans to the depot floor! I'm sure that's not too good for the telly!!

Anything which is delivered to me via Hermes, he collects for me as my house is part of his delivery area but some of them have arrived is very poor shape, boxes split and contents showing through.

But its not only Hermes, I've had an A4000 board returned from Anthony Hoffman in NZ via New Zealand Post / Royal Snail and it literally has had boot prints on the top of the box where its been stood on! Thankfully the board was OK, a few pins bent, but worked like a charm thanks to Anthony's skills wielding an mean iron!

That's a testament to Commodore for the building work ;) :D

Hi

Hi

I had previously ordered some C64 6581 Sidchip feom Germany and the guy sent them to me thru HERMES but I never recieved them ... Thinking it was some old chips too but The guy did a real good job by finding exactly the same chips again and them thru DHL...
Good job indeed!
Hermes is far from being good as the french fashion brand...

Had two parcels from Hermes recently. Both on the first attempt have had "Second attempt" ticket automatically.

The last item was delivered (admittedly just using a single sheet of brown paper) ripped apart.

Maybe we should send a Hermes employee through their own system in a cardboard box...

who wants to place bets that they'll still be alive by the end of it?
