First picture: Amiga (1200) rgb to scart on some random samsung lcd tv with scart.
Second picture: rgb to vga on a dell 2410.

I was expecting similar or even better quality, but the colors or so horrible I had to close my eyes! No settings seem to match the darker smoother colors as seen in my previous setup.

Is this to be over expected? Any ideas on how to tune this?

The display quality should be better than that. Possibly a bad cable or converter.

As the owner of 3 Dell U2410F monitors, I often adjust the monitor's settings based on the image displayed between different Amiga's. While the list of settings is not exhaustive, there are multiple options; some vary from port to port, with HDMI providing a better picture but fewer available settings that can be manipulated.

Interestingly I connecter a macbook via HDMI and a screen shot online of the same image showed the exact same dithering pixels - but when I zoom in it looks fine. On the macbook it looks fine too without zoom.

What VGA adapter are you using? On my AGA machines the jailbar-reducing one screws the gamma/brightness and can cause similar issues

I build my own from a PCBway archive, making 20 at a time - the biggest cost is in using actual 23-pin connectors. Mine are buffered, but not the VLR ones, as I found those don't make much difference on my monitors.
