ok its come to the point where i have over six thousand mp3s and its a nightmare finding the right ones.

What i want to do is a 2 part process.
Part 1:
This is not a problem plenty of free aps will do this..
Analyze the mp3 and detect they key its in "a major" "a flat" and so on. then add the key to the comments of the id3.
like i said that part is not an issue the problem is part 2.

part 2:
What i then want is an app that will read the comment data of the id3 and make a folder (a major) (a flat) and so on, then move (not copy) every mp3 with a coresponding id3 comment to the relivant folder..

i have looked and looked but all i can find is Use "xxx" program to id the key (not a problem)
then use itunes to make a smart playlist.. but that is not what i want to do..

I dont see how it could be difficult to simply make an app that moves the files to the correct folders..
I had "incorrectly" assumed that most if not all the key detection apps would do this as a feature. but it seems none of them do..

any help would be appretiated.
Even if i can do it from a bat file or something it would be preferable. beause 6k files is a Lot to manually check and individually move.

Possible to do through MP3Tag?

I would assume mp3bee can do this.

These advanced things are not easy to find, though.

For analyzing and tagging mp3s, i use Picard.
It has a phletora of plugins available. I use the lastfm genre plugin, which adds a whole bunch of genre/mood/decade/origin info to the tags. Any tag value can be used in the path to store the files.
Not sure if Picard has a plugin that is able to provide major/flat analysis though...

not sure if that would do it or what the %###% tags would be I guess if i could do c:\%comment%\%title%
that would do it.

I'd do it in two steps:

1. Create a separate reference file in plain text format with the filename and key on each line.

2. Use a scripting language like Perl or a UNIX shell script to read each line of the text file to:

- Read the line and check which key is there.
- Check if a directory exists for the key, if not then create one.
- Make a variable name to represent the correct "key" directory path.
- Move the file into the variable name.
- Read the next line and so on.

Something else. Just wondering what version of windows you use. In Win 7 you might be able set up the "Group by" view in Windows Explorer and perhaps select your key that way then simply drag the grouped files into manually created directories. The "Group by" feature allows you to group with additional properties using the 'More...' function.

E.g. open windows explorer, right click in a directory and select [Group by],[More...]

PS. What is an id3 ?

Just found this reference: http://www.finebytes.com/mfr/help/fields.html

id3 is just like information about the file that apps can see.

so you could have the file:
music.mp3
but you open it in an app and you would see
(music.mp3 "track info" "artist name" "album name" "year")all the bits in the " " would have been taken from the id3 tags..

I use ID3-Tagit - its similar to the MP3 Tag program mentioned above, howver, it has loads of features.
Be aware, ID3-Tagit requires .NET Framework, so you'll need to install that if you're running on XP still.

it seems i can simply arrange them by comments.

i do have to manually move them in chunks once i did that, but it is much better than the alternatave lol.

just a matter of getting all the comments populated with the correct values now.

so its taken me about 2 days.
6 thousand mp3's pruned down to just over 5 thousand.

every single one has its key in comments. (had to re encode some as they had ape tags)
Every single one has its camelot denomination in the key.
(both thanks to keyfinder1.25)

and thanks to mp3 cover tag 1.0 every single one now has its correct artwork.

And thanx to a bit of work and being able to arange files by comments in windows 7, all are in the correct key folders..

only took about 2 days lol..

one day il start arranging them by sub genres. that should only take me about 2 years to do as il have to listen to them all individually to decide what they are lol.

thnx to ed.d for making me check if i could arrange them by comments.
