Hey guys,

recently acquired an ICD Adspeed for an(other) A500 project I am doing. The last few A500s I refurbed ended up with 68030 boards (Tk and TF) with 64MB or 128MB FastRAM etc, so I wanted this machine to be much closer to original period appropriate specs.

Therefore I thought a modestly boosted 68000/68010 or at most a low end 68020 with zorro 2 16bit FastRAM would give a nice little kick for Workbench and a few polygon based games, whilst keeping the machine reasonably close to what we would have had back in the day.

To that end, I managed to get hold of an AdSpeed. I have never owned an AdSpeed before, but from what I have read, they can be a pretty temperamental beast and conflict with most other Amiga hardware expansions.

The system the AdSpeed was to go into is as follows:

Recapped Amiga 500+ (rev 8a) motherboard with OS 3.2.2 ROMs ***
2MB Chip RAM via trapdoor expansion
8MB/IDE board from Sordan (goes into the 68000 socket)
32GB CF Card with Amiga OS 3.2.2.1 installed (PFS3) ***
RGB2HDMI

*** - yes, yes, I know this is hardly "period appropriate" but as it is essentially software, not hardware, it would have been POSSIBLE back in the day. :) I may change this to either 1.3 or 3.1.

Now the system runs perfectly without the AdSpeed installed, a little sluggish (660 x 420 overscan in 16 colours), but rock solid.

When I installed the AdSpeed I get instant crashes, flashing power LED, Yellow Screen, flashing yellow screen and combinations of all of these. If I remove the CF adapter (not just the CF card) from the IDE header then the system boots in both 7.09mhz and 14.18mhz modes to the Kickstart screen and will run fine showing the disk animation until powered down. This leads me to believe the AdSpeed itself is fine.

If I jumper the AdSpeed to 7.09mhz and power on with the CF Adapter connected then it will start to boot, but crash at a random point whilst booting Workbench. If I use the early boot menu to boot with no startup sequence it will do so with no issue.

At the CLI I can navigate to Sysinfo and run Sysinfo. It will load and run Sysinfo but as soon as the Sysinfo screen pops up, it crashes again - it does this at both 7.09 and 14.18mhz.

I have read that many people with AdSpeeds have to have it disabled to load Workbench, but when loaded can enable it, which I thought was weird as the components loaded into RAM to load Workbench are accessed many times AFTER Workbench is loaded, so if they were an issue to system stability when LOADING Workbench, why are they no longer an issue after Workbench is loaded? Weird.

Any ideas?

I ran into the same "Yellow Screen" issue while building an expanded KS 3.1 A1000 about 10 years ago. It seems that the AdSpeed works fine with 1.3 ROM, but 2.0+ is no go, at least that is my experience. I hope you can figure it out. I have both the AdSpeed and AdIDE waiting for a project.

Thanks for the info mate - you have confirmed what I thought. The good news is I am thinking of going to KS 1.3 for nostalgia, so will give that a go.
