One of the great things about going to shows is the chance to play some games from Independent developers.
When I was in Sheffield I found a couple that got me interested from fun Pac Man/ bomberman mash up clones like Chompy Chomp Chomp to challenging hardcore platformers like thelettervsixtim.es

Recently I have been pointed in the direction of a few more games and I thought some of the guys on here might be interested in them. I'm not much for writing reviews, but if you like some simple, fun, diversionary games with a retro theme you might consider a couple of the following to try out. Most are PC based, but there are one or two that are for modern consoles, and one that is for a classic system.

First up is 8bit Killer. This is a smooth FPS shooter styled straight out of the Nintendo book of NES pixel art. It plays a lot like Doom, but with a clean, colourful simple look. Power ups are available with classics like rifles and shotguns to be had. Great Fun.

If FPS is not your thing, or you prefer platformers there are plenty out there that you may like. One that I've enjoyed and has particularly attractive theme is You Have to win the Game.
This is one tough cookie of a platformer, be prepared for some hair tearing, moments! It is superb fun though and it has some brilliant visuals. It evokes the 80's platforming experience very well indeed, even going so far as to frame the screen with a monitor bezel to complete the feeling.
If you like your gaming retro, this is definitely worthy of your time.

Finally, this is a game I picked up In Manchester at the Play expo. Encyclopaedia Galactica I do enjoy playing new games, especially on old platforms and this is one for your Speccy. The basic idea is that you are a researcher looking to collect information about new species for the Encyclopaedia for which you get paid. First you choose a star system, then a planet, and then the adventure begins. You fly your ship through asteroid storms to begin exploring the planets. Above and below ground, under the sea, everywhere until you find a species. Some are dangerous and require sedation, others are harmless. Once you disembark, you can collect species and store them in you rship. Collect 3 of a kind, and sequence their DNA in a fun mini game and you get paid. Simple. However, resources are limited, fuel and equipment. The environment that you have to explore is huge. It is all to easy to end up blasting around burning up valuable fuel without anyway to buy more.
I've only played it a couple of times so far, but it has great potential. If you fancy playing something new, with a great game mechanic, you could do a lot worse than this.

Nice Phill , it's strange but I'm getting in to platform games ...

Misspent youth on the c64 probably. I love this thread.

Any more?

There will be a few more, I've been playing quite a bit recently. I like games that are accessible. ;)

I'm trying a few on the App Store the min.

Bagman , a lode runner clone and trundle hd ... A limbo esq game

By all means, write a short review and post links. I'd quite like to see what people are playing, and if it gives me something else to try, I'm happy. :)
As long as it's indie, then it's good for this thread.

Humble Bundle 4 for Android, PC, Mac & Linux

Humble Bundle 4 for Android, PC, Mac & Linux

This was pointed out to me earlier Humble Bundle 4

6 Games, good ones too, for your Android device, Windows, Linux or Mac. DRM free and also available on Steam. You chose how much to pay and can even proportion how much each agency gets developer, distributor and charity!
As a sweetner, you also get the soundtracks for the games included to listen to.
Buy it once and install them on every device you own! A real bargain. I shall be getting this myself, and will do a write up to let you know how it works out. :)

Grabbed it the first day. Love these bundles, and this one is great as it's cross platform.

Waking Mars is awesome.... Wanted it on Android but prefer it on PC. Steam Greenlit too.

Humble Bundles all have been pretty good.

I've picked up every Humble Bundle since the first one. Great stuff!

You should also check out the Indie Gala bundles (http://www.indiegala.com/). Most of them are for Steam downloads so they are not DRM free like the Humble Bundle stuff.

I've merged my 2 threads here as it seemed appropriate, but I also want to point out that the Humble Bundle 4 have added 5 bonus games for those who paid over $6.29....

Avadon: The Black Fortress
Canabalt
Cogs
Swords & Soldiers HD
Zen Bound 2

That's a total of 11 games, brilliant. I'm still playing my way through the original bundle and I have some firm favourites.

Firstly, Eufloria. This is a beautiful, atmospheric, Real Time Strategy Game. Simple to play, and suited to both PC and touch-screen play. It has a couple of modes of play, challenging and pacey, or relaxed and chilled out.

It is an ambient game of "space exploration and conquest that employs surprising themes of plant growth and bio mechanical evolution."

Basically, the game centres around colonizing asteroids in space with your seedlings, creating small self contained eco systems with specialised skills, and acting together to defend your colonies against encroachment of the Greys.

Next, Crayon Physics Deluxe HD
Again another simple game (there's a theme here). Basically you have a target star on each screen, and you must guide a small crayon ball to the star to complete the level.
To do that, you can draw literally anything you wish and it will react in a convincingly realistic way. Fulcrums, levers, weights, balances, catapults, rockets anything really. It's all rendered in a colourful crayon theme, which adds to the feeling of fun.

Finally, for the moment anyway, is Machinarium. This is an artistically rendered point and click adventure. Usually I am not only rubbish at these, but I tend to get bored by them very easily, however, this has held my attention for well over a week now, which is something of note as far as I am concerned. You control a small robot, attempting to break into and free the citizens of a small robot town who are currently suffering under the tyranny of a couple of robot bullies.
Each scene is charmingly depicted with plenty of detail, and the puzzles are sometimes challenging but not impossible. They are tricky enough, however, to make you feel a sense of achievement when you do finally figure them out. If you are struggling, there is a a hint book on each page. You can't simply cheat and look in, you have to complete a side scrolling schmup, where you guide a key through a tunnel, taking out bouncing spiders. It is usually short and pretty straightforward and a diverting and fun little game, but if you complete it and unlock the hint book you are rewarded with a comic book depiction of the solution to your particular problem. This can prove very handy indeed.
In all in all, I've thoroughly enjoyed it.

I haven't had much chance to play the new games, but I am familiar with Canabalt. Primarily through the C64 version, C64anabalt.
There is only one control in this game, jump. That's it, you only need a fire button, space bar or mouse click to play this.
The soundtrack and pace is awesome, and I love this game on my C64. Get it, it's ridiculously addictive and simple.

Hotline Miami and McPixel are fun games. I just love the crude humour in McPixel, but it won't appeal to everyone, and Hotline Miami is just pure violence (but the fun 'not real' kind :D).

McPixel

Hotline Miami

McPixel looks intriguing. :)

For those dithering about the Humble Bundle, there is only 5 more days left to buy it.

Mcpixel is a great game. Has anyone played VVVVVV it can cause some stress on the harder levels and occasionally be nice to you:thumbsup:
