is the A1200/A600 external power interchangable? the same?

which ones work with the 1200?

thanks :)

The PSUs for A500, A600 and A1200 are exactly the same, and thus interchangable. However, the ones originally delivered with most A1200s are a bit underpowered, the best ones to look for are those with 4.5A output (you can find those numbers on the bottom of the PSU).

If you plan to use an accelerator, I would get an A500 PSU as an A1200 PSU may not give you enough output to run a stable system.

Its true that 4.5A PSUs are more reliable, but this depends on your setup. With just a memory expansion and a HDD your fine with 3A. Always remember that every PSU you will get is old (except for modded ATX models). Therefore they might loose capability to power the system. Things change if you add disk drives or a CD-ROM (only if it draws power from the mb) and/or a 040 CPU. Those expansions take advantage from a stronger PSU.

I found this to be true aswell. My A1200 came with a low-power PSU. You can tell instantly which one you have by dropping it on your foot.

The better one is the one that breaks it!

For a stable system, use the heavy one. I had a spare PSU I was using for my A600 which I switched for the light one.

The under-powered one is okay to use for an unexpanded system, but for my Blizzard 030 it crashes every now and again, and if the disc is being written to you run a high risk of errors.

The most powerful ones are light, and heavy is not necessarily good, but the heavy ones will probably last longer (transformers don't really wear out). I also have a heavy 3A model and it's working fine with my 1200 with the ACA1232. Actually, the 1200 with an ACA1232 and Indivision installed doesn't use significantly more power than a plain A600 when measuring the power consumption on 230V. For 040 and 060 I would use a more powerful PSU.

i think they made loads of different supplys for the 5/6/1200.

heavy 500 went upto 4.3 amps on the 5 volt, light went to 4.5 amps.

The one to avoid is the A600 PSU as it is the weakest of them all and often failed to deliver enough in an A600 with just a 1MB ram expansion and external drive. Some are as low as 14W.

The A1200 ones are a bit more powerful, if I remember correctly about 24W, but still underpowered for an A1200 once you add any expansions.

The heavy A500 PSUs are the best, rated at 50-60W.

But as already mentioned, if you want to run an expanded A1200 then a modified ATX PSU is the best option.
