Hi,

Is there anybody out there on Amibay that knows if it is possible to get a USB keyboard that only has Greek characters on it, with no Latin characters? It would be even better if it had upper and lower case Greek characters, but all upper case is more than acceptable.

Cheers,

Being greek myself, first of all i couldn't even find a single reason for a "greek only" keyboard to exist and second, i haven't seen something like that in ages. I maybe wrong so if some other greek fellow amigan knows something different, then i stand corrected. I suppose that the only way for you to go is a "dual" language keyboard (latin/greek) but this depends on what you intend to do with it. :)

@J A: Your best bet is to find a set of adhesives to place over a regular "Latin-character" kbrd. Got an Apple (inox) Greek/Latin one last year, and paid a lot, may be a neat bit, but i regret buying it. No plain Greek ones available though...

Hi Portaniros,

Thank you for your reply. The reason I am after a keyboard with only Greek characters is because I am trying to learn the Greek language, and I find associations between Greek and Latin characters really unhelpful.

For instance, I noticed the other day that the names of the Latin character "P" and the Greek character "Π" are pronounced similar, but I do not associate them with each other at all. As a result I tend to pronounce words with "Π" in a Greek fashion, with equal syllable length and correct emphasis, rather than processing it in my mind as a Latin "P" and trying to associate it with the equivalent Greek letter.

Also, Greek keymaps seem to be based on the US keyboard layout, which means that many common symbols are in the wrong place when attempting to use a UK keyboard, so I would rather just have a Greek keyboard just for Greek language work.

Thanks Salaxi,

I had a look at some stickers, but as you say, you still end up with Latin characters. Maybe I could take a keyboard and retrobright the keys until the Latin characters are bleached out, and then apply stickers?

Having said that, I have stickers on this keyboard I am using now for Sony Vegas Pro, and they did not stand up to much before they started falling off and the contents was erased.

There are greek-only keyboards, but as you can imagine they're made in Greece apparently. Also, although I've seen such keyboards in my country, they are rare to find now.

Not to mention that they are certainly not USB. Anyway, let us try and have a look around here and maybe we could end up with a proper solution. No guarantee of course that there will definitely be a result but it'll be worth a try. In any other case, there are a lot of greeks in here that could help you in anything greek. Let us know if you need any other help (live via skype) :)

Thank you chaps,

My girlfriend is Greek (she is actually in Chania at the moment), and I spent much of the last month settling in a Greek friend into his new home and job in England, so I have been exposed to non-stop Greek, and yet I understand τίποτα :) I have picked up a few words but my girlfriend was not so impressed when I picked up a bottle of milk and enthusiatically pointed at it saying "Ματι! Ματι!".

My girlfriend has found no keyboard for me. I know many of you Greeks hang around here on Amibay and the Greek Amiga board, so if anybody was going to locate one, the chances are that you guys would... :)

To be honest i can't remember exactly when i saw a Greek ONLY keyboard.

Few months back a saw Spectrum QL's with ONLY Greek keyboards. 2 of them.

As salaxi54 and portarinos said earlier is very and i mean very hard to find a Greek only keyboard.

However since i'm involved this period with old pc's if i find a PC keyboard (with AT plug) i will catch it for you.

And of course for free.

Apparently you are talking about the "Sinclair QL D Plus" which was a version worked-upon by a Greek company. This included Greek ROMs and a bilingual keyboard (English/Greek). You can find a review in Pixel magazine in an issue between 32 and 38 (I cannot remember right now and cannot be asked to google it).

I very much appreciate the offer Seaside, but don't worry about it. I think I will probably end up buying a keyboard with blank keys and put stickers on. Hopefully, but the time the stickers wear out I will know the letters and where they are anyway...

IBM used to sell keyboards with Greek characters (latin were smaller on the keys), I once had a IBM keyboard that had GR chars *only* ...(something from my first OS/2 experiences... ;-} )

Chania? WOW!!!! :D

The problem about the greek-only keyboards, is that even we're avoiding them.

Pfff, newbies..:P

I think its rather easy for someone to find lots of Greek keyboards (if one knows someone in there) in goverment services even if i think most of them changed their equipment a few years ago.I used to see a lot of those , especially IBM`s .Not USB of course but not much of a problem.
Not very helpful to the author anyway , `cause i have none of those .
