As my Amiga 1000 is stuck with loading Kickstart from floppy at the moment, I was looking for an easier all in one solution and I found reference to a Kickstart / Workbench mix up disk which will boot to the Kickstart of choice then load a basic workbench.

I haven't been able to make any further headway - I do own all copies of Workbench (1.1 - 3.1) that I'm interested in loading, and, I do have Amigas 500, 1000, 1200, 600 and 4000 so I legally own various versions of kickstart (and can be proved on request), So ......

Can anyone provide me with and adf / dms versions of KickBench ? Apparently, theres a 2.04 AND a 3.1 version out there somewhere (it uses extra memory if available for the extra size ROM required.

I'd be very grateful, and may encourage me to use my A1000 a WHOLE lot more.

THANKS

I have a 1.3 version on ADF if you want it.

I hate to be a party pooper, but can I remind folks that Kickstart and Workbench are still protected by copyright and distributing them is against the law.

AmiBay rules are very stringent regarding copyright infringement. You can only sell what you legally own, so you cam't distribute this image in its own right.

For clarity, I meant the mkkickwork binary - see attached :)
This was fixed by Piru to work with Kickstart 1.3... I actually used my A1000 to build the disk :)

What it does is patch trackdisk so that the KICK bootblock identifier (the first 4 bytes of the disk) is treated as a valid DOS disk (normally DOS followed by a null in the BB ID). The disk's bitmap is also modified to block out the 256kb used by the ROM...

The disk I've created loads the kickstart, then boots the hard disk that I've got attached which requires a boot disk.

This attachment is just the mkkickwork executable patched to work natively on Kickstart 1.3. It's from Piru, and is freely distributable.

Which is the reason is put this text in my post
"I haven't been able to make any further headway - I do own all copies of Workbench (1.1 - 3.1) that I'm interested in loading, and, I do have Amigas 500, 1000, 1200, 600 and 4000 so I legally own various versions of kickstart (and can be proved on request)"

Don't want to do anything illegal.....

I believe any Amiga 1000 owner has a license to own/get a copy of a Kickstart disk since the machine does not have a Kickstart ROM inside like other Amigas... Why would it be illegal to give such an owner a copy of Kickstart? That's what I want to know. Can this be explained to us?

It really is different than on the Amiga 500/600/1200/2000/4000 as these have Kickstart ROMs installed already.

Say you find an A500 at the Thrift store and bring it home. You fire it up and the machine has Kickstart 1.3: This means the machine has a license of Kick/workbench 1.3 So if the machine has a missing disk set you should be legally allowed to get Workbench and Extras 1.3 without any hassle. Now if this owner decided to troll Amibay asking for Kickstart ROMs and Workbench Disks for 2.0x or 3.1. THAT IS A DIFFERENT STORY.

I would suppose that "officially" we own what was supplied with the machine. Any othere Kickstart disk at the time would have been purchased as an upgrade.

It's a legal "grey area" I think for A1000 owners as it isn't possible to buy such a disk anymore - and Amibay *SHOULD* be seen to be doing the right thing...

But as I said, if I own all the Amiga's, surely, I also own access to all their kickstarts, regardless of the media I choose to use ?

Thank for all your help btw TJ - much appreciated

Yes, it would be illegal. This is a common misconception, especially among technical people who look at situations logically. You're making assumptions that aren't there. Remember the golden rule:

Never assume the law makes sense, is logical, or follows common sense.

Far too many people come up with ideas like this: "The computer shipped with an OS, so I can provide a copy", "My DVD came with a download code which I can sell separately", "If I destroy an original copy, it legitimises this duplicate I've made", "I bought this on CD, I can rip it to use on my MP3 player"

It all sounds reasonable and plausible. It fulfils the moral obligation, at least in the mind of the person making the judgement. But that does not magically make it legal. You may think that's stupid, and you would probably be right, but that doesn't change the fact that it's the law.

That makes no sense at all with examples of DVDs and CDs and mp3's. The A1000 came with no Kickstart or BIOS. The machine does not work at all without this disk. Every machine came with the disk, and this disk was encouraged by commodore to make a working backup copy. So if one owner lost the disk he would have to go purchase a new disk? Makes no sense. And 28 years later where can one purchase a copy of Kickstart 1.2 for the Amiga 1000? I don't believe Amikit or Vesalia sell one. And you'd have to be a complete moron to buy that disk. (Unless your buying it for collecting purposes)

And on that note, this thread is closed. AmiBay must follow the letter of the law, whether it makes sense or not.
