We were talking about Wills at work today (My boss has actually left me a Hanimex PONG machine in hers, no really) and someone asked me "who will you leave all that old game junk you have to in your will" (their words not mine!) and it got me thinking, I would have the thought of someone just dumping all my retro goodies in a landfill site or it going to some no mark trader.

So I was thinking I'd love to leave it to people who would appreciate it and look after it and keep it in the community, so I was thinking about asking someone here to act as a kind of distributor for my stuff and distribute it to people here as he sees fit, maybe there could be a thread and people could request stuff on a first come first serve basis. I know it's an odd thing to discuss and I hope it won't need to be thought about for some time yet, but the long sleep comes to us all at some point and we all really need to think about what happen when to leave this mortal world!

What do you think admins, is this something that could be done here?

I've thought the same in the past, it's a starange thing to think but we all gotta go some time.

I would hate to think of all my stuff in a skip or on eBay to the highest bidder.

Yer exactly, the thought of it all on a rubbish tip makes me a very sad boy! I think you would be the best person to distribute it for me Steve as you live near by you can keep what you want and give away the rest, hehe ;)

I've also had this thought and even asked another member here if they could handle the redistribution of my stuff. I figured I'd let whoever handles the sale keep a percentage for their time and effort and the remainder would go back to my beneficiary. Unfortunately, the person I discussed this with no longer visits the site and I haven't talked to him in quite some time. I know I'd be happy to do this for others and I hope to find someone who will do the same for me.

I have had the conversation with the wife in the past and she said she would dump all my stuff :(

I wonder what the "market" will be like by the time I die, assuming I live to normal age.

My stuff could either be worth thousands, or completely worthless. I'm guessing by that point, most of the original equipment will be non-working and only really suitable as a display piece.

I have mixed feelings about computer museums. I love the fact they're collecting and documenting all this stuff but feel like the gear would not get used as much compared to a hobbyist?

Rcm maybe they use there systems at every show we go to

Eg andyrcm

I'm quite lucky actually, my son has already put dibs on all my systems for when I pop it. I know for a fact that they will get some good use then. :)

If you like this site and the community on it, it may be a good idea to donate your retro treasures to the site to raffle off. That way it can help pay the bills & improve the site and some lucky Amibayers will get some cool stuff. My wife is the same, she looks at my toys and asks me as I tinker, "So the purpose of this is to ..." hinting that I'm wasting my time.

What you got? ;)

On a serious note I think it's a great idea. There are some really genuine collectors on here and after seeing some of the pride people take in their setups around here I'd have no problem donating my stuff to some of them. I don't have any kids as yet so currently if I pop my clogs before my parents I'm donating it all to them to sell as they've never had much money and have always supported me so I'd like to give them something back.

I plan to be buried with mine in my Dolmen so I can continue to enjoy them in my afterlife

Just a suggestion, why not put some money aside to rent out a hall for a few hours and auction the stuff off raise money for your family and sell your goods to people that will appreciate it?

I's sure there'd be people here happy to assist.

I've had this conversation with my family, it's agreed that my "crap" (as they call it) is heading in the RCM direction.

.. My wife is the same, she looks at my toys and asks me as I tinker, "So the purpose of this is to ..." hinting that I'm wasting my time.

 Exactly the same for me. My wife moans whenever I'm "playing" with anything computer related. "What are you doing on your computer again?", "You have more important things to do than play on that!", "Are you on that computer again? (Instead of sitting here with me watching the most mundane brain-dead drivel reality/docu-soap featuring the lowest IQ people, whom in real life you would avoid)".

So yeah, I've thought the same thing. What would happen to everything I own once I die. My son is only 2 years old at the moment, but hopefully when he is older he might take an interest and then I will be happy that even if he didn't want to keep everything at least he will have some understanding that it is worth something to someone and he will find it all a new home.

I'm also hoping he gets interested in web design so he could take over helping out here or maintaining/continuing other projects I started.. but that is a long shot considering I have zero interest in most things my Dad does (hunting, shooting, fishing, gamekeeping etc).. although I know his fishing equipment and guns are worth money and would find them all a good home.

@Harrison

I'm sure he'll be interested in the near future. :) My four-year old daughter has taken more and more interest in computers, especially my Amiga 1200. I have an original game with Noddy (remember him from TV?) for example and she loves playing it. She can use a mouse now and also the keyboard to some extent.
