This seems to be a known problem with that controller. Theretroweb says for the successor Adaptec AHA-2842A: "= AHA-2842VL with Write Back compatibility jumper", see:

yes, i bought the A and problems gone.
Still a very good controller, but not if you want it in a WB system.
