Hey all! Long time lurker, first time poster!
So, I thought I'd pop by with my predicament.
This last Sunday, I acquired my first Amiga, a Rev 6 A500. For its age, it looks almost pristine! Powers up fine and boots to Workbench with a disk in the floppy! Score!
Never thought to do much past that as I don't have much software to test the Amiga with currently unfortunately. I am planning to mod it to the nines with an accelerator, RAM, Go-Drive, and whatever else it will need to be the best 500 it can be.
It was yesterday when I discovered an issue with my Amiga. The Keyboard locking up and not working. So, I was playing some "David Baddiel & Frank Skinner Fantasy Manager '95-'96", the game booting to the title screen and letting me go through some of the menus. It was in one of these menus that my Amiga locked up, the keyboard not responding, and the Caps Lock key blinking a single blink.
After reading up on this code, it seems to signify an issue with the Keyboard ROM.
I didn't think much of it at first and restarted my Amiga, but the issue persisted. The Caps Lock stayed on for longer than it did on a normal boot, then the blinking began again. The keyboard had locked up.
By the time I had been looking at the Amiga, wracking my brain to what to do, I went to bed since it was late at night.
That leads me onto today. So, I decided to bust open my Amiga to take a look at if there was anything amiss. Since the Amiga was booting and running fine, I didn't think it was anything to do with the mainboard. Regardless, I made sure all the chips were seated properly by pushing them all in. Some of the chips were a little loose, but none of the CIAs were, only Denise. Booting the Amiga, the issue had seemingly gone away, but returned later. This confused me even more, leading me onto a restart, this time leaving it without power for longer than before. This seemed to do the trick, but a few reboots later, the issue came back.
I tried replugging the Keyboard connector too, which didn't change things. This leads me to the issue that I believe I have.
Either it's a marginal ROM, or something on the controller board has gone bad. I've tried reflowing the solder, this not working at all.
If anyone has any ideas as to what I could do, please let me know. I'm contemplating getting a new board, maybe a DoohicKEY or something of the sorts.
Thanks!
