Hi guys. Hope this is in the right place.

I’ve recently picked up a Mega CD MK1 from the other bay, and I’m wondering how I might best go about telling whether it has had a recap or not? Thinking it will need doing if it hasn’t had it so will need to check.

@scrappysphinx will know better than me but how do the caps look generally? Are any bulging or looking slightly dogdy?

Post a picture but if i'm honest i haven't seen a model 1 Mega CD that doesn't need recapping over the last few years. Even if it looks fine i would get it recapped anyway, just to prolong its life as its an expensive addon these days.

got some Amazing Mega CD Games that is worth playing..........Final Fight, The Secret Of Monkey Island, Star Wars: Rebel Assault , Snatcher, Flash Back, Android Assault: The Revenge Of Bari-Arm(shoot em up) and Sol-Feace(shoot em up) :)

Fond memories of all of these 🥰

I will try to open it up and post a pic soon. Thanks guys!

Looking at these images I’m going to venture a guess and say it’s been recapped. Some of these joints are definitely not factory. Thoughts?

Also looks like it may have some kind of mod looking at the red cable. Anyone got any idea what this is?

You have me a bit paranoid now, I can't remember @scrappysphinx did you ever recap my Mk1 Mega CD? I know you did the WonderMega

That has definitely had the caps replaced on the mainboard, they are usually small 10uF SMD caps, they've been replaced with through hole caps, it doesn't look the best quality if i'm honest. Doesn't look like the pads were cleaned before the new caps were put on. I would imagine the red wires are trace repairs, the leaking caps can damage traces. Personally i would remove the caps, clean up the old solder and pads and then refit new caps.

I don't remember about your Mega CD mate. I know i've done your WonderMega and your multimega i think but don't recall a MK1 MCD.

This thread perhaps?

Novice job then. I did think the through holes looked a bit out of place with no holes 😅

Going to be a pain cleaning this up. May have to wait for more funds for the caps and when I’m off work at the end of Feb.

I possibly kept one of them for myself but I don't think Mike ever recapped it. Although probably it's one I bought later as I sold almost all my stuff in 2014 and bought it back at twice the price a few years later lol

yeah,its been recapped,not a great job,they could of cleaned up after,but whatever

Had a quick look online (well, on the other bay), and it seems most capacitor kits sold on there are the through hole type. Safe bet that’s where they came from.

Edit: even Retrosix sells these ones it seems.

I’ll prob replace them at some point just so it’s “proper”, it’s prob fine as is but I feel bad for it 😂
