Hi all, as you may know Fitzsteve was recently selling some Mark 1 Mega CD consoles. I was lucky enough to purchase one of these beauties. Well i waited (impatiently
) for it to be delivered. It finally arrived yesterday morning. As the delivery driver handed me the parcel it looked like it had been used to play football
Opening the box, there was a ton of bubble wrap so i figured it would be ok. I eagerly grabbed my nearest megadrive and hooked everything up. Power came on as i heard the drive close (it wasn't fully closed) but there were no lights and a black screen. Disconnect of the megadrive and reconnect and we had a bios screen requesting a disc
Thats when the problems started.
I inserted the Arcade Classics i was lucky enough to receive with the console and it took the disk and said to press start. I pressed start and it did nothing. I hit the reset button and again nothing happed. I switched off the power and back on again and we were back to a black screen. Clearly something was wrong. As i moved the machine i heard a rattling from inside...
I contacted Steve and provided him with the necessary photos and information required for him to process a claim on the insurance and then i set to work to find out what was wrong with it. Luckily i have another Mark 1 mega cd with a dead drive assembly (broken tray and laser guide cogs) so i could pinch spare parts if required.
Upon opening the machine all looked clean and tidy and i couldn't spot anything obvious. As i moved the machine around a little i located the rattling.
It came from the edge connector. Upon opening the edge connector compartment i found there were two small clips holding weights on either side of the board and the weights had snapped. I changed the edge connector for the one off my other machine and hooked everthing back up.
Power was applied and the mega drive lit up but again no lights on the mega cd and a black screen. I used a multimeter to test the fuse and sure enough it was blown so I set about to replace the fuse properly. I had some fuse holders laying around so soldered one in and drilled a hole in the case to mount it into the side of the machine. Screwed in the new fuse and tested again and all seemed to be working well.
I will be fitting this machine with a region free bios soon so while i had the machine open i figured i would remove the bios chip and install a socket so when i finally get the new chip i can just swap them over. While i was doing that i thought i'd change the led's. There is no actual reason for doing this other than i like to make my machines a little different from the normal
The power led is now purple and the access led is now blue but there not really clear enough to see in the picture.
***PLEASE NOTE***
Steve's packaging and support with this machine was fantastic. When i messaged him i told him i wasn't looking for any compensation or to return the machine i was just informing him of how it arrived. He took it upon himself to file the compensation claim and is currently dealing with it. I cannot faul the guy at all.
