Not since Vista have Microsoft managed to totally f*** things up. Well, today I fired up one of my Xboxes to do the latest dashboard 'upgrade'. And it's one unholy mess! Seems that it's great if you have Kinnect but if, like us, you haven't got around to it yet, it's anything but.

Spent a very frustrating 10 minutes earlier trying to find some XBLIG games. I knew the names. Could I find any with the built-in search? What do you think?

We had been thinking about getting Kinnect for crimbo but now? I'll get it on my terms, thank you very much M$ - I won't be forced into it.

Absolutely positively livid.:mad::mad::mad:

The other Xbox won't be getting this downgrade.

This is why it was a mistake to ever connect consoles to the Internet, it lets them push out whatever the hell they want whenever they want.

whats the problem? it seems the same to me, just a different lay out?

Vista wasn't that bad either if your pc was up to it:p

I don't mind it myself, but a lot of hardened gamers are quite upset about it as apparently it makes it more difficult to get to their games.

I haven't actually used it much yet since it was changed, but it would be a nice feature if you could customise your interface to suit your particular needs.

Thanks for the warning. I will not be updating my kinectless 360 and i certainly wont buy a kinect just for browsing a dash!

Yup one thing no consoles have is the ability to customise the layout yourself. In this day and age where consoles are more like restricted PCs they need to allow for people to atleast have their own preference to layouts and navigation.

looks like it gives ephasis to online media/games/demos/give_us_monies and they throw it at your face: every central big square is for something to buy... everything else is in the little squares next to the blatant ads!
I don't like it either.

ummmm, main menu, then my games? it doesn't seem that difficult, it sounds more like "I don't like change":(

I'm getting awfully tired of people saying "well, you just can't handle change" like it makes you some kind of backwards troglodyte. GNOME 3 decides that you really, really want your computer to be a tablet, no, really, trust us, you do, people complain, and GNOME Team and their defenders go "oh, well, you just don't like change." Microsoft screws around with the interface on their console for no good reason, people complain, and defenders go "oh, well, guess this is just too progressive for you." You're damn right I don't like change! It's something I tolerate when there's a good reason for it, but it's not something I like, and oh hell do I resent being forced or duped into it.

"Change" as an end unto itself is imbecilic.

I personally don't like this:

those things inside the red square are just ads! they even say it at the bottom right corner... the truly useful "panels" are the 2 small ones on the left side...

Give me back the original 360 dash from launch day, that was ace. Hated 360 dash when they introduced the avatar thingies.

Change isnt bad... Forced change when people are settled is...

Everyone was the same when the dashboard changed first time around.

These are the terms you sign up to when you signed up or connected your console to live/internet. SO yeah it is pretty much live with it, everyone knows this is what happens.

EDIT: Actually what I said was rubbish really as you are forced even if you are not onlive as they add these updated dashes to games discs

Yes in some ways it almost feels like you're renting your hardware.

but you are renting your hardware, the money is made on the games and advertisements

Dashboard updates don't bother me as long as i can still access my games and play them... But i suppose it's in most people's nature to pick at anything new or different :)

Nope. Change is good. When it's an improvement. As a developer, when you make changes you have to make sure it's better than the last. This simply isn't.

Finding 'My Games' is the easy part. Finding games to add to 'My Games' is what's tricky. I was looking for Orbitron: Revolution, an XBLIG title. It's buried a couple of layers deep and the pane is not immediately obvious. Even when I got there, I couldn't find the game at first because it wasn't showing up in the search. They've removed the ability to browse Indie Games by Title or Alphabetically. Now, the only way you can do it seems to be by browsing through the 2000+ panels, which are listed in date of release, with the newest games first.

So the list isn't even in alphabetical order. How many people are going to know the release date of a particular title? Or where's it's going to sit in relation to the 2000 other titles? Setting it up like this has to be one of the strangest decisions Microsoft have made with the Xbox.

i find it amuzing that some one who is a member of a retro forum can be suprized that other members dont like change lol.
Even if its not "suprize" and just an observation, its kind of redundant because look at us lol..

only people who dont like change happen to have games on floppy disks and read magazines from the 80's

I hate everything new lol..
Im stll using xp. Set up to look like windows 98!
I hate when i have to fix a xp system and the controll panel isnt a new window. or they dont have my computer on the desktop.
Sure i change it for them whilst im using the thing. But atleast i have the option.
Apparantly not something that is available to the 360, And M$ wonder why people like to hack consoles if only to use customized dashboards Which really is how they usualy start, everything els just stems from the exploits available afterwards.

p.s

I think you can dissable adverts if you try. You used to be able to at least its hidden away some where.
