The 6522 is actually still in production.
The Western Design Center makes two different varieties of the W65C22 and the W65C22N is a direct drop-in replacement compatible with the old MOS6522.
You can get it from distributor Mouser. Look for part no. W65C22N6TPG-14
They work well in both the 1541 disk drives and the VIC-20.
They also work in earlier VIC-1540 disk drives and drives for PET computer 2031LP.
Added edit : 1. Avoid at all cost the W65C22S because these can cause short circuits. 2. The W65C22 of any type uses about 1/20 the power of the original chips so they do the exact same job without dissipating any discernable heat!
