Hey guys, wondering if someone can speak from experience with regard to my issue.

Having been bitten by the Amiga bug a short while back, I've gone from being happy with just the 1 Amiga I had, to having no less than 5 of the buggers.

Two of my units are A500s. What I've only just taken notice of today is that one of my A500's (the older of the two with an earlier rev mainboard) emits very 'muffled' type sound. It still outputs through both left and right channels and isn't distorted or crackling, and you can hear all effects, nothing missing. But it's just.... not as sharp or clear when compared to my other, newer revision A500. It otherwise works perfectly; never crashes.

I am no good when it comes to how electronics work etc. but at a guess I'd say the most likely culprit is that a capacitor or two related to the audio circuit is drying up / not working as efficiently as it used to? But I would've thought if that's the case, I'd be hearing crackling sounds or distortion.

On that note and on the flipside, I've always wondered why is it A600s and 1200s are far more commonly needing re-capping than A500s which you seldom hear of people needing to re-cap? This seems to be somewhat contradictory given A500s are even older.

I have a specialist who lives not too far from me that re-caps A600s and A1200s. I could ask him to re-cap my A500 (assuming he has the bits / has done an A500 before) but would like an indication as to whether or not it's the most likely cause of my muddy sound issue before getting him to do it.

Given it's not emitting any distortion or crackling, I can't help but wonder if it's down to the fact that earlier revision A500s were renowned for more muddy/muffled sound output when compared to the more recent rev 8 A500s etc. But then I'm thinking they should all have the same sound quality across all revisions as they use the same sound processor...

Thanks for your input guys!

Not necessarily. Recapping audio circuit (including audio power decoupling) would be my first step. It can't be said certainly that capacitors are the reason of problem, but they are first to be suspected.

This is because A600 and A1200 use SMD type capacitors from some cheap manufacturer. They leak more often that THT capacitors used in A500.
