The rumoured NeoGeo portable is real and will launch in Q2 2012. Video game accessories and retro console specialist Blaze has struck a deal with Japan’s SNK Playmore and US distributor Tommo to bring the NeoGeo X handheld console to market.

It will come with 20 licensed games built-in, such as Fatal Fury and The King of Fighters ’94. The NeoGeo X will also feature an SD card slot, a 3.5-inch LCD screen, A/V output, internal stereo speakers and a headphone socket.

MCV understands the console will be released in limited edition form and could be priced up to £500.

The news comes after rumours suggested a new NeoGeo console was in the works.

Blaze’s Jason Cooper said: “The NeoGeo console has always been a personal favourite of mine and I am delighted to be involved with the development of this new handheld console. We hope to re-ignite the excitement many of us felt 21 years ago, in a more affordable manner, to a much wider audience."

Tommo’s Jonathan Wan added: “I am very proud to be working with SNK Playmore, as NeoGeo is a strong brand with an excellent gaming pedigree.”

Blaze will also launch its £99.99 handheld GameGadget console on March 30th which allows users to download a variety of retro games.

The company has produced several other retro consoles such as the Blaze Sega Megadrive Streets of Rage handheld and the Atari Flashback 3 console with 60 games built-in.

Here’s the full list of NeoGeo X’s built-in games:

It looks like an iPhone 4, how ridiculous :P
Those games run fine on my Caanoo fortunately!
Did you read about the price??? :blink::blink::blink::roll:

Well, it's a collectors item ... :D

£500 for something manufactured by Blaze :o!!! I hope it's a thousand times better than their Sega efforts at that ridiculous price! Just buy a cheap Dingoo or Caanoo and be done with it ;)

I think the phrase rhymes with clucking bell :Doh:

WHAT!? that's as bad as trying to sell a fake Metal Slug 1 cart as a genuine one. £500? more affordable? That thing will cost a fraction to produce, they are simply taking the wee wee at that price. At the end of the day its still an emulation box. If it actually had REAL MVS hardware in there then it may be a different story.

£500 you could buy a MVS and AES setup with a couple of games for that :roll:

Doh, would have a been nice at a fraction of that price. :)

For £500....You could buy Second Hand PS 3, XBOX 360, WII and if you still got moneys left then buy PSVITA or Have a Hoilday :thumbsup::D

class KeepingInTrend{

if (members == impressed){

System.out.println("For £500 you could buy every mainstream retro console from sega and ninty and get a decent library of games for each! :o");

}

else {

System.out.print("For £500 you could get yourself one of every everdrive and have a massive collection of games, then still have enough left for a weekend break with your consoles!");

}
}

:thumbsup:

The thing that's mad is that it seems like they maybe think they can charge £500 based on it including Metal Slug 1.... which yes, costs £stupid on AES.... but £nothing on MVS. So if they are trying to cash in on the current "state" of the AES market, then *BZZZZZZZZT* Fail! When you're on emulation street you have 20 ROMZZ that cost £zero to copy over to the machine and £not much to license.

I hope it was a misprint and infact its only £50. This would make more sense, being £20 more than the Megadrive handheld they released a few years ago.

Any more than £100 and they have a real dud, which would be a shame as it looks nice.

One can hope that they have a bit of sensibility.

...which would be a shame as it looks nice.

That's certainly one oppinion ;)

I'm content with playing some emulated pre Neo Geo SNK titles on my vita and ps3.

Which probably gives you a better handheld NEOGEO system :lol:

@ Phips - Dont worry, the old 'vote with your wallet' rule will soon come into play and then these things will be down to a reasonable price before you can say "ROUND 1 !"?

UPDATE: A spokesperson for Blaze has told Eurogamer that the £500 price tag suggested in MCV's story is incorrect.

"It's not £500," they confirmed. Apparently MCV's figure was based on a month's old forum post from a community member declaring what he'd be willing to pay for the device.

Blaze wouldn't confirm what the actual price will be, but said an official announcement will be made soon.

:roll:

well let's hope its a reasonable price then may consider getting one :) certainly won't be paying anyway near £499 :blink:

oaky guys.... thats enough of the price discussion, any more and I will start perhaps the longest roll of post edits in history... I would be humbly in your debt if you dont make me do that.

thank you...

Now, a mobie NeoGeo is surely a good thing.... while my PSP Slim does an amazing job at this I would be interested in the bundled titles and how I might go about getting more...

Sadly I fear for the unit as Blaze isn't the best of qualities..... I find their hard-emulation a little lacking in either graphics speed or sound... or both.... and the LCD's that are used kinda come accross as too small for the unit and arguably a little washed in colour.

I do hope that they can get this niggles sorted out and deliver a strong hand-held as the NeoGeo has some amazing titles with a wealth of both graphical and musical detail that is truly amazing.

fingers crossed eh?
