Hi all,

Random item that I no longer need - A Netgear ReadyNAS 2100 v1, populated with 4 WD 2TB Green HDDs for 6TB storage in RAID5.

The disks are all in good order without bad sectors, and the unit itself is clean and functions well. It's the shortest depth rackmount NAS I was able to find at the time, being just under 30cm deep - meaning that it'll fit in most comms cabinets rather than needing a full depth one.

I'm looking for £200 plus fees and postage as appropriate, although if you're coming to the meet in May, I'll happily hang onto it and bring it with me as it weighs rather a lot.

Will do pictures if requested - they all look the same lol

Best,

Colin

I've not set up a RAID5, but I believe in a RAID5 1 drive contains 'parity' information (not unlike QuickPAR/MultiPAR) to be able to re-create the data on any one of the other drives (combined with information on the surviving drives), should one fail.

(or, I guess, a portion of each drive is set aside for parity..in this case 25% of each drive?)

should it not be 8TB storage  or does being in raid5 make you lose 2TB?

You're kidding, right? That is exactly what RAID5 does. You lose one drive's worth of storage capacity. If one drive malfunctions, you can replace it with a new drive and the array will rebuild itself without dataloss, although performance will be less than optimal until the array is finished rebuilding.

Well I didn’t realise that, everyday is a learning day

Never used RAID5 something I need to look into then

I’m way behind the times maybe I should stop playing with Amiga’s

My new NAS I've configured as RAID6 - I lose 2 disks worth of space on that, but gain a bit of resilience in return. 8 x 2TB drives in there at the mo, so 12TB space to play with - hopefully will be a while before I need to install larger disks!

I'm going to bung this on eBay and see how much it goes for - wanted to give first refusal here was all :)
