Hello Amibay, new member from New Jersey USA. My collection includes an A1000 I purchased new in 1985(?), two A500’s and an A2000. The A2000 is hooked up to a Magnavox monitor and is currently working fine, while the A1000 and A500s haven’t been turned on in years. Monitors include one 1084 and two 1084S in unknown working condition. Additional hardware includes: A1000 Microbotics and GVP A500 hard drives. A1010, A1011, Air Products, and MAST (dual) external disk drives. I also have the Miracle Piano – fun way to learn back in the 1990’s.

I would like to verify the working status of my equipment. I have read conflicting articles on the implications of turning on old equipment due to capacitor age/condition. My interpretation is that the A500, A1000 and A2000 are less prone to capacitor failure than newer Amiga models. Are there any precautions recommended for my computers, monitors, hard drives and disk drives prior to connecting/testing?

Thanks in advance for any ideas/recommendations.

Welcome to Amibay! :check:

You'll be fine powering on the Amiga 500 and 1000, they don't have the capacitor or battery problems the other Amigas have. Unless it's an A500+, which have a Varta battery in them.

Thanks. So can I assume there will be no issues with powering on the monitors or connecting the hard drives?

Sure, you will not know if they work if you don't power them up.

This thread was great to read. I have my A1000 boxed up (!) under the stairs and now that I am an empty nester I want to fire that baby up! Time for some Marble Madness!

I haven't played that in many years but loved the music and graphics. Good luck.

Hi Bobcat or should I say hi neighbor I'm from PA. From my experience as an original owner of a 1000,500,2500 and 4000 /40 video toaster and most everything in-between though mainly towards graphics and some games .My 1000 has no battery or capacitor damage and started right as well as my 500 the battery was on the underbody memory 512k card I removed that no cap damage ,my 2500 I removed the battery no cap damage it was a video toaster set up till I purchased a 4000 and upgraded the toaster card for that united that started right up but I noticed battery leakage to its out being recapped and cleaned up. After 35 plus years I selling everything. Though it seems difficult on Amibay asking for PayPal f&f I guess as a trust factor so I'm trying to sell smaller components to build that relationship ship up .I find in this new world of ours where face to face selling is not available in this forum trust is an issue .I'm a 73 year old vintage hobbiest who loved and cared for my equipment and want someone who appreciates the vintage quality of the Amigas and how they helped change basic computing .Best of luck to you in your ventures
