Hello.

I am on a whole new project that i want to share.

In 1999, i was a poor student and i only had my old A500 Plus for computer.
I needed a PC for serious work. I had to take a job for the whole month of March, and i finally earnt about 3000 FF (about 450 EUR) to buy a PC.

For that amount i only had a AT mid tower with a PC CHIPS SuperSocket7 mobo, a K6-2 350 MHz CPU, 32 MB, 6GB HD, a poor SiS 6326 AGP, integrated sound chip and 15' no name monitor.
I had a lot of troubles with that hardware and Windows 95C (got no OS with my new computer so i used an older OS).

But after a while, and being a ferocious negociator on the second hand market, i have been able to buy better parts, such as a TNT board, later a Voodoo 3, even much later a Radeon 7500, a SB16 ISA (which by the way is still in my A4000 today), then a SB64 AWE, then a SB128 PCI and finally a SB Live Player. I also had at some point a PCTV card, a DXR2 card to watch DVD, a 2x CD burner, etc.
I upgraded the CPU to a K6-III 450.

I ceased to use that computer at the end of 2003. By that time i became a resident and bought a great HP Centrino laptop to carry with me.

Despite the lack of power of my AMD CPU and the old technology never ahead of the curve that caused me to always have bugs and non working games, and several annoyances (the whole computer was stolen from me for 6 months in 2000 - long story), i miss that computer.

It happens that it is still buried somewhere in my storage room.

I have started to buy parts to rejuvenate it and build again the most powerful typical SuperSocket 7 CPU.

It begins with CPU.
The CPU still in the computer is a K6-III 450 from the first batch that can't be overclocked one bit.
So i have bought those babies and want to take one of them at 600 MHz which should be the maximum frequency for that kind of mobo.

Then i have bought here from Cosmicfrog a Voodoo 3 3500.
I used to have a Voodoo 3 3000 AGP, but the 3500 is faster and has video capture abilities. No more Radeon or other AGP card because i think the Voodoo is the best for that computer's time range.

I keep the SB Live Player PCI and the DXR2 board (Voodoo 3 can't play DVD). The last PCI port is for a USB2 card (non working USB1 on my old mobo).

I have 2 ISA slots and one should be for a NIC.

As soon as i will have the parts in hand i'm going to rebuilt it and post pictures.

Nice.

Im really envious of the voodoo 3500 you have. I used to have one back in the good old days.

I look forward to seeing more pc based pron :)

I also had a 3500 and loved it, except for the fact that you had to have that huge cable plugged in, even if you were only using it for video output.

Good luck on the project!

This brings back memories :D

I started out with the exact same type of baby AT pc, pc-chips rubbish but I was lucky because they had plonked in a K62-450mhz.
Had problem after problem with that dam pc until I went and rebuilt it with an atx tower and gigabyte ga-5ax or whatever it was (forgotten in the mists of time lol) Anyway that simple re-build job made the K62 come to life! Had a Soundblaster 1024 Live and a Voodoo 3000 agp on that. Running Windows 98SE.

I miss that old thing, maybe its time to build another :)

EDIT: Anyone remember the s*** awfull sleeve-bearing fans that came with socket7 cheap-ass coolers? I started out going through one after the other until I got sick of it and found a globalwin heatsink coupled with a 60mm ball-bearing delta fan, never had a single issue with that again. That cooler is still in its original box now! Some odd reason I never let it go lol.

My project is stalled for now because i haven't received the 3500 yet.

I'm wondering now if i should keep the SB Live Player i used to have, or change it for a Yamaha PCI board which would be a true OPL2/3 compatible board.

Besides, what could be the max HD space that this generation of mobo with Win98SE could take? 32GB or more?

@Electroblaster: if you have references for the Globalwin heatsink, please let me know. I also hate those noisy fans.

Windows 98 supports hard drive partitions up to 128GB with FAT32.

You might need a BIOS upgrade to use drives larger than 8GB.
