I apologise for posting this here but I am banging my head against the wall over it. My daughters cruddy pc needed to be gutted out. It just become a terrible sack of poo and could not cope with playing store bought dvd films!

So a few days back I finally gutted it completely. re-cycled the hard drive, soundcard, psu and sata dvd writer. She got a new board, cpu, ram, cooler and video card.

It runs like stink now! everything apart from one flaming thing! Dvd films (store bought) refuse to play correctly still.

Now the suggestion will be "swap out the writer" well this was done already 3 times on the old machine and it never fixed the issue. The dam writer is new! It did it on the old machine and now the the new machine. Dvd films just pause in a cycle, the same delay and slogging of the whole system which then renders it un-usable until you eject the dvd!

In contrast I lob in a backed up DVDR of the same film and hey presto! it works like a charm... Can anyone please help me on this? Just ask me whatever you need to know.

I have done this so far:

Updated the motherboard bios
Updated the dvd writer bios
Checked everything is up to date
Checked everything over and over, leads everything.

Apart from this dvd issue the machine runs like the clappers and does it well! actually puts my machine to shame at the moment lol

Her new pc is comprised of:

MSI G41M-P33 Combo motherboard - New
Q6600 quad core cpu - Old (from a different build)
HD4850 video - Old (bought in second hand)
Crucial XMS3 4GB memory - New
Samsung 1tb HDD (sata) - Recycled (from an old build)
Xonar DG soundcard - New
Artic Freezer Pro Rev7 cooler - New
FSP Blue Storm psu - New
Samsung DVD writer (sata) - New
Windows 7 x64

install VLC (VideoLAN) media player, associate video_ts.ifo with it (ie open automatically when you double click) run

never had a single problem playing them

install VLC (VideoLAN) media player? Very good as I have them as well :)

this is a bug if win xp

I'm betting all the shop bought DVD's are dual layer. his backup etc will be single layer.

it's as far as I can tell a HD-audio driver issue and thats why windows refuses to even read a dual layer dvd. (no UAA support.(Universal Audio Support)

look at this see if it helps http://support.microsoft.com/kb/888111 (win xp) your probably on windows 7 so i guess it could be a similar issue

without UAA windows will refuse to even read a dual layer disk

Ok guys I always use VLC. This happend with everything! Power DVD, VLC, WMP. It did this with her old machine and config.

It is VERY annoying! I think the best option for me is to actually film this happening and get it up on youtube. Every other machine in this house works fine. I can take her dvd writer, put it in a random machine and it will just work. Every single dvd film will play with no hassles. What is it with her and dvd problems lol.

Also the pausing is the same kind of thing, it is not random, its like a pulse. Read, pause, read, pause over and over...

Take that dvd film and put it any other drive... works fine! Even in other drives I have tried with her machine.

It as if she is not allowed to watch films or it is DRM... could it be DRM? I thought drm would just refuse the dvd to even open?

Did you change the DVD drive cable for a new one as well?
(yeah this wouldn't adequately explain why the copy plays well, but hey PCs are *** aren't they).

Install AnyDVD

#EDIT#
My PC also will not play protected disks (without AnyDVD)
in fact I cannot even do a CRC scan without it.

I think it might have something to do with missing ASPIs
I used to have 2 (Nero & Adaptec) now I have none.

dvd drive region changed at all?
any dvd should by pass that.
perosnally i use K-lite media codec pack + media player classic for all my movie files.

just to check, someone is suggesting that windows xp through to 7 can not play dvds correctly? really? if so then all of my PCs since dvds came out must be really special ;)

i just use http://mpc-hc.org/ with no external codecs

media player classic for the win!
(i like the k-lite mega codec pack though. also gives me codecs for encoding with hyper cam, and the media player)

You say you recycled the Hard Drive, but you don't say whether you re-installed Win7 x64 or not after the new parts went in. If you didn't I would suggest a config/software issue, maybe a bad driver (possibly AHCI etc.) Although newer versions of Windows cater better for installing new components in without the need for reinstalling, I would suggest that if the problem was there before, and it's still there now, logically this can be the only place the fault can lie, assuming what you've said is accurate. If you have reinstalled and you are still getting the same issue, double check any setting that you tend to set out of habit, just in case one of them is causing an issue too. Sometimes we change settings out of habit (such as auto-run etc.) and cause ourselves a problem without realising it, so I would go through the build one step at a time.

Sorry guys :picard

Ok first up. Fresh clean install of Windows 7 x64, so zero trace of anything old. Sata cables swapped over and even replaced with no difference at all! As said before, bios updated and dvd writer rom updated/flashed.

All that happens is the same stupid pausing, 3 seconds of video and then 18seconds of locked solid. This goes on stuck in a constant loop and if there is any attempt to try and getting it moving along the o/s will complain about it. It reminds me of when a cd is damaged/dirty or when a hard drive starts going south. But everything is ok on that front!

I have ended up giving her my son's old PS2 console along with a cheap usb capture device so she can not only play old games but watch dvd's (its not a case of just ripping them down to mp4) she has loads of them. Box collections etc. This just works 100%. It seems like I will not be able to sort this stupid issue.

Currently there are two more pc's here very much the same hardware wise but just work 100% on all fronts.

EDIT: Also occured to me that DMA could be disabled! But its on and working.

The only thing left from the original machine are the soundcard and psu. Maybe a hardware or driver issue?

Possibilities; Just throwing these out there :)

- HDCP may try to block content if you are not using the correct monitor cable. Might need to change to VGA cable, not DVI (DVI-D)
- If you're native screen resolution is higher than 1920 x 1080 then HDCP can also try to block the DVD playback.

I've had both of the above happen to me.

- Have you installed all the necessary codecs to play the content from shop bought DVD's?
- Do you need to alter any DirectX settings to allow playback. Video renderer etc
- Do you need to enable Hardware acceleration?

Good luck

i still think its a possible sound issue.

try going contol panel and disable sound card, then see if it plays smooth ?

i have this issue with xbmc if one of the dts decoders are set as on, very stutter / stop / start play back as the pc struggles to figure out the audio codec, newer encoded dvd's tend to have dts hd-audio on the dvd disk.

You could rule out both sound and graphics by removing them and using the motherboards on board versions then reinstalling your sound and graphics card and seeing if/when the problem reoccurs.

Ok thanks guys! I will look into this lot.

Thing is though... Two other machines are virtually clones of each other. All gigabyte boards, all based around the Intel G41 chipset (old now I know) and all have the same video card and sound card. But one machine just will not let go of this dvd playback problem :(

I have some other idea's to try along with the advice from you guys. I will attack it all again at the weekend and see what happens.
