I got this A2000 for around the same price of a cheap meal because of the mess it was in.

When i got it it was in pieces, with the casing including the bezel wrapped completely with some ugly colored skin which was hell to remove.

The front bezel had most of the risers broken and had to be replaced. The case was also warped but thankfully not badly damaged.

There was NO kickstart, most of the socketed chips missing, no floppy drive, no power supply and no screws. There were wires coming out from underneath the motherboard to connect an AT power supply with plug and all.

What it did have was a very nice looking REV4.4 mobo. The original battery was still in place with absolutely no leaking at all which was another plus point, so maybe all was not lost.

I replaced the missing socketed chips (kickstart, denise and the cia's i think) and attached an A500 floppy drive and a PC power supply and decided to give it a go. Fingers crossed, say a prayer and hit the switch.

I couldn't believe my eyes. I was seeing the purple Kickstart 2.04 screen and heard the floppy drive clicking. Tried some disks and it worked great. Mouse, joystick, video, sound, everything.

I straightened out the case, replaced the damaged front panel/bezel, cleaned it up, got an almost new original A2000 power supply and removed those nasty pc psu wires that were attached to the bottom of the motherboard.

After this the machine lay in abandon for about a year or so as i was concentrating on my A1200.

Next, I changed the chipset to ECS instead of the OCS and upgraded the kickstart to 3.1. I also replaced the 512K Agnus and did the mod to address all the onboard ram to chipram giving me 1MB chipmem :)

It still needed a hard drive controller and some fastram. It did come with a commodore 2MB expansion and an Alf2 SCSI controller but the 2MB expansion was faulty and i could not get the Alf2 controller to work. I also needed a keyboard.

So I got myself a nice GVP HC +8 Scsi controller with 8MB Fastram and added a 1GB HD and Scsi CDROM drive. Ahhh much better now. Also got a Keyboard. Both from here of course :)

Still not content with the setup, I decided a big box Amiga is wasted without a RTG graphics card, so along came the Villagetronic Picasso II. A lovely card but pretty useless with a 7Mhz 68000.

So, I needed a CPU upgrade. Part exchanged a spare A600 for a Commodore A2630 for a nice 25Mhz '030 boost. Now I was able to install OS3.9 and some goodies. I also managed to install Picasso '96 and finally had a decent RTG enabled Amiga again.

I then bought a GBS-8220 Scandoubler / Flickerfixer which works really well especially with the Picasso II's autoswitch.

I wanted more though and while browsing on the other bay i found and bought a very nice GVP '040 33Mhz Scsi combo with 16MB 32Bit fast ram. Now I had an Amiga 2000 which is in many ways considerably faster than a stock '040 A4000.

What I did not have is 2MB Chipram. Well after much searching I got one from here too. A Mini Megi 2MB chipram adapter :)

The specs are pretty much as I want them now. And really not much left to do. I would like to add an IDE controller and maybe some more fastram and an HD floppy drive, maybe even an Indi ECS someday but thats about it.

I have no before pics but here are some for you to enjoy.

nice job ... I do like the 2000 for some odd reason :-)

Well done mate! An A2k is a wonderfull machine, easy to expand. so take care for it!

Thanks guys.. It still needs some small things.

The case must have been slightly misaligned in its time because the fit is 95% not 100% when it is closed up.

I need the proper screws to for the sides of the case to close it up.

The floppy drive is misaligned. Maybe because of the case or else because it is of an A500 and i don't know if it is 100% the right hight for the A2000.

I need to solder an LED for the floppy drive. I have an LED, I just have not gotten round to soldering it.

Can't wait for the SCSI controller / RAM to arrive. A 512K Amiga is pretty useless these days.

Nice restoration.
<3 A2000!

When I got mine it was like this from side on;

I had the same issue on another 2000 I bought a couple of years ago with the case bending - seems it is quite a common problem
All you need to do 'fix'. Take everything out (be careful how you unscrew the motherboard as it will be 'stressed' from the chassis being like it is), place case on hard surface and stand inside* (literally!) - this will take it back to normal - as shown below!

*as this is an Amiga, no shoes or sweaty socks, only washed cotton socks please :)

@Paul_S - Wow and i thought mine was bent.. LOL!! Nice job fixing it and i like your quick and effective fix :)

I will definitely give that a go over the weekend.

Update to the restoration:

My *new* GVP HC+8 Series II with 8MB of FastRam arrived this week. I added a 1GB Connor SCSI hard drive i had laying about and installed Workbench 2.0, WhdLoad and some games.

Next on my list is:

Install Kickstart 3.1 (I will use the KS3.1 rom thats in my unused A600) + WB 3.1
Find some way to get 1MB ChipRam (512K sucks)
Install an internal SCSI CD-ROM drive.
Fix the case using Paul_S's fix :)

Eventually (As in when i have the money) I want to:

Upgrade it to 2MB Chipmem
Add a 68030 CPU or go the 68040/68060 route
Add a RTG Graphics card
Get an HD 1.76MB Floppy drive

The 2000 is one of my fav amigas although one of mine has died due to battery leakage.

But .. 2mb chip ram - Amiga kit sell the chipram mod it's NTSC but its pal selectable too.

Rtg use a piccasso 2 and use a cheap gbs video converter from eBay - see my thread :-)

Accelerators:

A500 drop in accelerators fit - mega midget.
68030 gvp - cheap but ram is a killer! On gvp stuff
68040 as above
68060 gvp used 30 pin Simms and there own bespoke ram

Lots of other manufactures made accelerators too..

But the thing with the 2000 is , it uses it's own CPU connector that is not comparable with the 3000 or 4000 but thats no big deal as there are plenty of accelerators for it as the 2000 was produced for a long time...

Mike.

I read about it some time ago but that's the reason the metal rod was introduced on later 2000's (the one that fits over the Zorro card slots). This was supposed to prevent the chassis from flexing.

To be honest, I'm surprised it got like that as the case is one of the thickest pieces of sheet metal I've come across. My car's body panels are thinner! :wooha:

Hope the restore goes well, they are one of my favourite all time Amiga's! :)

Nice restoration work!

I've always been a nut for the 2000. I bought a 3000T, which I love as well, but, nothing can keep me from my A2000 for very long.

.. especially since my TekMagic 060 purchase from tbtorro ... :D

Mine has that rod. I don't think the chassis itself is bent. The cover definitely is though, because it shows especially when compared to the plastic front panel which is obviously straight.

Today i'll remove the top cover, remove the front panel from it and straighten it out (hopefully).

Latest work done on it:

Upgraded Kickstart & OS to 3.1

Upgraded Agnus to a 8372 PAL 1MB ECS Agnus (Well it was NTSC but i cut/opened the J102 to force PAL)

Did the mod to get 1MB Chipram - I now have 1MB Chip & 8MB Fast Yayyyy!

I did not even know there was 512K fast ram hidden and not being used on the board. I can also confirm the board is a Rev 4.4

must admit I like my 040 A2000 over the o4o A4000 for some reason 2

so its the back 3 covers ya missing I can see now on the pics :)

An 040 on the A2000 is more impressive than it is on the A4000 that's probably why.

Well i'm missing 2 back covers. The other one has a hole in it. Probably the previous owner had some switch there.

More pics added... I hope i'm not showing off but if you guys are like me then it is always nice looking at new Amiga pics :D

Which accelerator card are you running? Mine could do with some extra power :)

Thanks :)

I am now waiting for my Megi Chip and it will be 2MB Chipram

Just 2 months ago it was with 512K chip / 512K fast, 68000, no hard drive and no keyboard. LOL
