Possible to remove paint from Neo Geo Arcade Stick ?

I just bought an Arcade Stick (Neo Geo AES) for use on my MVS when it arrives.

Its been refurbished internally and works 100% but the previous owner sprayed it red because it had a lot of scratches. It doesn't look too bad especially if I stick a couple of Neo Geo stickers on it but i'd rather it looks original again.

My question is, is there any way I can remove the red paint to reveal the original black plastic and logos/lettering which is obviously still there under the paint ?

Yes, I would use T-Cut car polish to buff away the old paint. It's a mild abrasive and will take the paint off without damaging the plastic. Brasso metal polish works as well.

They may well knack any original stickers that may be under the paint but embossed stuff should be OK if you use a toothbrush with the polish.

I have some Brasso at home.. So you think it won't make the black plastic rough if i use a tooth brush ?

Concentrated ammonia is good at removing that sorta thing but is unfortunately pretty stinky.

What Merlin suggested is excellent advice and I have found them useful in the past. One thing you must be prepared for though is a need for tonnes of elbow grease

Trouble is that you'll be rubbing the paint into the minute holes of the original pitted surface of the joystick meaning that you'd have to 'flatten' the original surface and that's going to leave shiny areas.

You could try automotive brake fluid, that breaks down paint after a while or maybe what this bloke has used??

Brake fluid dissolves plastic!! DON'T DO IT!!! :wooha:

If the paint inside the embossed lettering proves to be a pain, I would use a small jeweller's screwdriver to carefully scrape it out then buff up the inside of the lettering with Brasso and a cotton bud.

Do I have to think of everything?

I'd just spray it over in black and have a new red/white sticker made. Maybe the original is too scratched anyway.
