Does somebody know what are the symptoms of having ps3 with not-paired blu-ray player? I have a feeling I have just bought one like this :( . Seller said it has a problem with player, disc spins but no game is visible in menu. I know that he tried to replace it once but do not have contact with him anymore. It looks like laser is power on and finds disc, spins and it spinning as it should but nothing visible. Other thing is that player is completely in bits ...

are you sure the laser isent gone?

pop a normal cd in and see if it see's that.

Laser is known good working, have two :) . I found second drive and it is the same fault ...

sorry but i dont think you understood the question,as in your first post you say no games disc are seen in the system.

can you try a dvd or cd please, there is a good reason for this.:)
there is more than one laser in that drive.

Does the PS3 detect a disc - as in the little disc icon spinning?

how are you activating the ir sensor on the drive if its in bits?,just wondering:)

these are prone to failure by the way.

From my reading and understanding of the PS3, the PCB on the blu ray drive is matched to the motherboard - some kind of key needs to match. If drives are swapped, you must carry over the PCB from the old drive and fit it with the new one.

As you don't know the history of the drive, it could be possible the seller didn't do this and just made a straight swap?

Otherwise is the cable ok between the board and drive? Can you try another cable incase it has been damaged etc.

Yes, this is what the re-marry issue is about - pairing the mibo to the logic board. Easiest is to do as you suggest, but the old drive doesn't seem to be available in this case.

I may be onto something now, it looks like ribbon cable can be damaged, for sure socket on mainboard is . I mean, please, if you have two feet instead of hands do not do it :picard. The latch is broken but hep I can swap it with a new one, should have ribbon cable somewhere too ... I hope it will be ok after this.

It is quite easy, you just press two micro switches in right order and it will rise the laser assy and then put a disc with small magnetic wheel on the top, press eject to restart drive abd it starts to read. i know it works as for a while I was using my first ps3 like this :). This one spins and does nothing. once I had music cd loaded with number of tracks but could not read any. Hope ribbon cable will help.

And it is worth to mention that all latches from top cover are broken and guy used superglue to stick it back, sometimes it is to painful to think ...

wait a sec, which model are you talking about.(ive seen three types all have the ir sensor)

the part im talking about is the ir sensor( infra red ) if this is gone no disc shows in the system.(the beam is broken when the disc is inserted)
does it load ok when assembled.(it will still load a disc even if the drive isent paired to the system, but it wont load a disc if the sensor is gone)
if the reciever is gone then the disk still shows in the system after pressing eject.im sorry if this is obvios.:)

i dont use the method you mention, as this has its own problems on assembly of the unit.

as for the ribbon cable they can get broken,if the latch is gone you will deffinitly have problems there.the latch presses the cable againts the contacts it also centres the cable.(but the motors in the drive will still work as its powers taken from somewhere else)
also if this cable isent inserted properly when powered on it can destroy the controller board.
do you still have the latch part?

it also sounds like your ps3 is in a bad way,and been manhandled.i know they can take a bit of abuse but still the electronics in these is fairly fragile.and im sorry your having such bad luck with this one.:)

EDIT:have you tried the recovery menu by any chance,i know you have probably tried all the obvios stuff already, but i like you have came to the possibility that the drive isent paired to the system, have you asked the guy if he ever had a disc show in the system?
