Problems with Amiga 600

I recently purchased an Amiga 600 from a popular selling site. The seller noted that although the internal disk drive was dead, it booted from the hard drive. No problem I thought. It did as it said but then I had a brain wave. My local CHIPS had an Amiga 600 for sale with a working drive. I swapped the working drive into the machine that had the defunct drive. Booted up but got a red screen and nothing worked.

I uncoupled the disk drive and it booted up from the hard drive. I then uncoupled the hard drive and put the disk drive back in and it came on with the kickstart screen. They just won't work together. Ideas?

I will have a look. Never replaced caps before! My first Amiga 600 was back in 1994 so it would been factory fresh!
