This is a bit complicated, but hopefully someone can understand and answer this.

My PS3 is connected to a Sony DH820 AV Receiver (AMP), which is then connected to a Dell 27" monitor.

If I run the setup as normal with the speakers I can hear everything from the 5.1 setup. However, if I plug headphones into the Sony Receiver and play a video from the PS3 apps for Youtube, iPlayer, 5 On Demand etc.. I can only hear the background music and effects within the video and not the voices. Unplug the headphones and I can hear them through the speakers.

Games are not affected like this. I can play them with headphones and hear everything.

Any ideas?

Could it be purely an Amp issue (switching to only certain channels with the headphones connected), or is it a PS3 issues with the audio output during video streaming? The PS3 is set to output everything from 2 channel PCM to 5.1 TrueHD and DTS-HD for BD. I'm wondering if it is still splitting the audio channels into more than the 2 for headphones, even though the amp auto switches into a 2 channel mode when the headphones are plugged in.

It does sound like an amp issue if it's not downmixing properly to 2.0 for your headphones for all audio sources, leaving the center channel out. You mention Youtube, which is 2.0, so if that is the case, your receiver must still be DPLing it, even if you plug in the headphones. Strange one. What happens if you set the amp to direct or stereo? Does it happen equally with DD5.1 sources, like Netflix?

ps3 settings

U can change ps sound setting to be multiple channels as I have mine though optical on amp and hdmi on tv
Might be wrong but try if nothing else

I have this exact same issue with my PS3 going through my amp via hdmi. I'm so glad to find out I'm not alone... I've tried all kinds of settings via the reciever and the PS3 and have never found a fix.

The only thing I have found online regarding this issue is to buy a ps3 usb style headset that plugs into the PS3.

That is how I run my PS3 downstairs on my older AMP as it doesn't support HDMI, so the HDMI goes directly from the PS3 to the TV and the optical to the amp.

However on my other AMP the PS3 goes through the AMP via HDMI for both video and audio as I use the Amp as a HDMI hub too, so it isn't really possible to separate the video and audio, which is annoying.

I'm glad I'm not alone too. Thought I was going mad. Still loads of settings to try on both the PS3 and Amp.

Have you tried running an optical cable to the amp?

Not yet. Although I'm not sure if that would work as the video and audio are passing through the Amp together via HDMI, so I'm unsure if the video will cut out if it switches to optical audio.

I will give it a try though as I'm curious what will happen anyway.

It's not a permanent solution as it will leave out 5.1 lpcm, but it's a step to see what happen when the aforementioned apps are forced to 2.0lpcm.
