Hi all, maybe someone can help me.

My neighbour knocked on my door yesterday, first time i've spoken to him other than saying hello since i moved in 4 years ago, and asked me since he'd heard i have a go at fixing problems on pc and laptops maybe i might be able to help him with his TV.

It's a 20" Murphy LCD TV that was purchased about 3 years ago and when plugged in there is no power led on and the tv buzzes but won't switch on.

I opened it up and noticed two leaked caps on the power board.
I went off to maplins and purchased some new caps and replaced the two leaked plus the two others on the board just in case.

Plugged a power cable in and still had no power.
I noticed a power switch on the back so tried to flick it and it just springs back to the off position and won't stay on.

If i hold it in the on position the tv powers up and now works fine with no buzzing so replacing the caps fixed the main problem.

I went back to maplins and bought a new rocker switch and soldered it in place.

Plugged the power cable back in and flicked the switch and got power to the TV and all seemed to be working fine.

However the TV is currently switched on but if i flick the switch to the off position the TV doesn't power off.

So after all that my question is:

It seems my switch will power the TV on but not off, does anyone know why this is or is it meant to be that way?

The switch i bought is identical to this one

thats strange... all i can imagine is its residual power left in the caps?
If you switch it off with the switch and wait will it power down afetr a while?

Maybe the old switch had 3 legs? and thus bridging something to GND or something?

@Shambles, flicked the switch while it was tuning the freeview and it took around 5-10 minutes for tuning to finish and tv had still not turned off.

@Keropi, original switch only had two legs the same as the replacement. I took the old switch with me to make sure i got the same one lol

I wonder if the old switch was a momentary switch and meant to operate a latch circuit?

Ed.d, that's a bit more technical than i grasp. I can solder the wires to the switch but i have no idea how the switches work lol

So if it was a momentary switch and i've replaced it with a regular switch will that make any difference? Do i need to put the old switch back in place?

i dont think its the switch, but it does sound like something has overloaded on the primary side of the power supply anough for the switch to fuse the contacts.(fused contacts on rockers makes them spring back)

try to trace the feed back to the baord to see whats gone.

Actually looking at the remote control the there is both a standby and a power off button.

If i click standby the tv goes into standby as it should.

If i click power off the tv shuts off completely with no lights at all and i have to flick the switch to the on position to get it to turn on again.
