Why does the Radeon HD driver for 'new' Amiga's cost £34.99?

Seems us retro fans require deep pockets!

Because the people who developed it don't work for free ;)

Neither do the ones developed for the PC that you can download for free!

but are supported by hundreds of thousands (millions?) of users/buyers....rather than a few hundred....

How can the RadeonHD drivers and brand-new Amiga computers (ex. X1000) considered as 'retro'? :)

they aren't really... (well, at the very least i have a tendency to consider things retro when they get to be about 25 or so years gone...)

but the whole issue is paying someone to support a niche market...

the alternatives are a: no driver support or b: waiting a year or 2 until someone gets around to it in their spare time or c: support from within the user community itself (in which case, don't hold your breath)

The X1000 is not exactly new. Regardless, nobody in their right mind would spend over two grand on a new 'Amiga'. Imagine what kind of an amazing PC you would get for two grand. If these new Amiga's were made by Commodore (if they were still around) and cost around £600 then that would be more like it.

I'm a big retro fan with lots of real Amiga, Spectrum, Amstrad etc not just my quad core PC ;)

Yes, amazing PC indeed, thanks but no thanks. ;)

Phantom, Should have been be a big full stop before next sentence ;)

Talking about my initial post btw

I know PCs are a bit boring, but come on, they are amazing, you can do anything on them! I love my old stuff but I couldn't get by without a PC. Half my old machines rely on some type of interfacing with PC / media creation. Video editing etc. Amiga was great and is interesting, but it's in no way a serious productivity platform any more. Even Apple conceded to x86 / x64 in the end. They do not have the "soul" of an Amiga but are so much more useful!

So true sputnik.

PCs are souless but my home is full of multi track music PCs and HTPCs. Saying that I'll be in the retro part at Play Expo more than new gear (that I see every day at work).

Back to topic. Hans has done a great job with RadeonHD 2D drivers, which the latest release is 3D-ready, which in turn means that with the release of AmigaOS 4.2 soon, RadeonHD will have full 3D capabilities. We are a small and niche market unfortunately, so if you are really need something good, you have to pay. Besides, that's not a real problem for me, paying somebody for his services means more support for our platform in the future.

Everyone makes his/her options at the end. I chose to use AmigaOS 4.1 on my X1000 as my daily machine, others stick with peecees, macs or even linux etc. At least there are many OS flavours to choose from for everybody.

I find all the newer stuff interesting phantom but the new stuff doesn't do anything a generic PC can't so would be a waste of money for me. I thought the X1000 modified Fractal Design's R4 case was a nice touch but nearly fell over when Amiga Kit told me the price at play expo a couple of years back! I understand its niche.

As I said before. You make your options. Personally, I prefer to spend 3000+ EUR for a newly AmigaOS 4.x system than buy a windoze peecee with the half amount. :)

Slayer checks his mind 3 times and then decides it's not even worth explaining ;-)

They are indeed, I have 1 at each end of this table in FDR4 cases permanently connected by a null modem serial cable, how cool is that to serial capture between 2 AmigaOne X1000s! My 3rd is a backup, it's a long way to the UK you know. I will be swapping out one of these though when the time comes for a change.

Don't you see it's all just a great interest and passion and also modern computing too... Niiice win win for those inclined.

Also, when you say imagine what kind of PC you could get for x amount of dollars it isn't quite true since most people only want a x standard PC and it just so happens that x standard PC accomodates most peoples needs. When I ordered my AmigaOne X1000s I got double the memory recommended and I use 7970 cards in them, most owners got only what they needed memory wise and a middle range graphics card.

What I've always wanted to know is what the hell does everyone do with all this damn money they save since they are so tight in life in general... LOL

@Phantom, well done mate, you make very good points!

Am I right in thinking the X1000 is shipped with the HD driver anyway, it's just for the Sam you need to pay for a licence?

you are correct Phantom, to each his own :)

although a windoze peecee can now run OS4.x, can your 3000+ EUR run Windows as well? :P
