I am new to the Amiga. I have learned quite a bit through all the interactions I have had, but I cam here to this forum by invite by Dan Beaver, when I met him at VCFMW last week.

So, I have an Amiga 500 with the HC520 attached to the side (Motorola 680EC20 32Bits CPU clocked at 28hz, 8MB of Fast RAM, CF card slot, SD card slot, IDE port). I have ROM v3.2 and Kickstart version 47.111.

I want to build another installation of Workbench on another CF Card (acts like a hard drive). I had a previous set (6) of floppy disks (Workbench 3.1) that came with the machine and I built another set (6) of floppies (also Workbench 3.1) using ADF images from Internet Archive. With both sets of floppy disks, if I boot from the install disk 1, I get a pop-up that states that it wants a disk with "LIBS:/icons...". I put each of the 6 floppy disks, and the message would go away and then reappear. This happens with BOTH sets of floppy disks.

So, obviously I am not doing something right. Is the message a bad error message meaning something else?

If I want to create a new "hard drive", is that done during the installation, when I go to install workbench? ..or do I need to format it first and install something prior to Workbench?
How does one go about doing this?

I am trying to learn from this, document the process, etc..

Icon.library is missing from the 3.2 kickstart rom.
You have to do it manually as astuermer suggested.

I think it means that icon.library is missing.
Try downloading it from Aminet. There is a faster version of it available there. Copy it to your installation or boot disk.

Great! Where do I put it? I have the six install floppies and I do not believe the SD Card is accessible during the boot of the floppy. Do I copy it to one of the floppy disks, or a floppy disk of its own? That honestly might also explain why I am getting mixed icon results when I boot from my existing WB installation. Hmm!

If you have a Kickstart 3.2 ROM in your Amiga then you really should be using OS3.2 Workbench floppy disks, not 3.1.

There is a floppy disk specifically geared to set up ad install a new HD or CF card in OS3.2 for you. You'll find it on the AmigaOS3.2 CD. Head to your local or online Amiga retailer to purchase it :)

Echo above on what Miggymad has mentioned.

If you own Kickstart 3.2 ROM then you should have had this when you purchased the 3.2 CD ROM from a Hyperion reseller.
Also as part of that CD set is a unique Code key which you can then register and setup an Hyperion account over at:

This also allows you to download the latest Amiga OS update 3.2.3 as well as the updated ROM 47.115.

Amiga 3.1 ROM has both the Workbench.library and Icon.library contained therefore none of these libraries will be on the Workbench/ Amiga OS 3.1 disks.

Fast forward 30 years. Hyperion started updating Amiga OS 3x and as a consequence there was no room for the both ,libraries mentioned. So they were relegated to files on the 3x disk set starting with AmigaOS3.1.4 which Hyperion no longer support or update on. Therefore Amiga OS 3.2 is the latest and supported by Hyperion.

Before I move forward with the above suggestions. I do not have a CDROM on my Amiga. Is that required? Can I read the CD on my Mac and then create disk images from there? Or must this all be done on an Amiga?

Side question.. if someone was starting from scratch, does not have an existing HD or HD Setup via HC520, how would one go about doing this? If they only have a blank hard drive and the floppy disk drive in the side of the A500? I could myself lucky I have a WB installation already so I can do somethings on my Amiga.. but I did not, how would I go about doing this!?!? I am trying to learn how to do this should anything happen to my current setup or hard drives - what-have-you.

The CD can easily be read on a Windows PC. The floppy disks are in the form of .adf images. If you have a GOTEK drive and a USB pen then it’s just a simple way of copying the correct floppy files to the USB pen and using the GOTEK by selecting the install adf image and following the prompts.

A lot of people these days use WinUAE on a PC or MAC to setup their Amiga OS builds and then transfer these over to the Amiga. Plenty of YouTube videos out there that show you how to do this.

Ideally if you already have a Amiga setup and want to create your own floppy disks of the images then there are plenty of ADF to floppy drive floppy writing software available.

As long as you have the Workbench floppy disks that match the Kickstart version in your Amiga, you can install it just fine. e.g. with Kickstart 3.1, using the Workbench 3.1 disks will work just fine by booting with the Install disk. Same goes for 3.2.

OK, I tried to https://www.hyperion-entertainment.com/
..and there is no AmigaOS 3.2 CD ROM.

There is only AmigaOS 4.1. ..and it says it is for "Pegasos 2".

I am now very confused. HELP!? I looked all over their site for AmigaOS 3.2 .. and found updates to it, but no ability to obtain it as CD.

I am sending an email to "info@hyperion-entertainment.com" to see if they can help me out..

AmigaOS 3.2 is available from Amiga dealers. I'm not vouching for or promoting anyone, but since you're in the US, one possible place to buy it is Amiga on the Lake:
