I'm looking to get some work done on a couple of A4000 boards, but given prices of couriers and customs I wanted to find someone "domestic" rather than shipping the boards around Europe.

Anyone used a reliable service in UK? Search engine return few websites, at least one has been already discussed (not very positively) on this forum.

Just curious if anyone could recommend one based on their personal experience.

Thanks in advance for the help and suggestions.

Steve @ Retropassion did all the recap work on my A1200's. Have had no issues with the quality nor the company.

Thanks for the feedback.

It would have been my first choice, then I read a post from a guy with an A3500 board and a less than positive experience. Granted I've read only the member's side of the story (but since RP is banned on Amibay I'm not likely to know more) but that put me off a bit...

I guess if I choose RP I'll try first with one of my "lesser" Amigas and see how it comes back.

My experiences with Steve were also good he did 3 premium recaps for me. but I know he can get busy which incurs delays on his returns maybe contact him first and workout a time line with him.

His ban on Amibay was nothing to do with his workmanship if this also helps.

I had read about the ban for different reasons but it's good to confirm.

RP was banned because he was caught scalping. I'm sure he's very good at what he does, but I personally wouldn't touch him with a bargepole after that behaviour.

I would recommend Amigakit, they've recently some repair work for me on one of my A1200s and I'm really pleased with the service received.

I know Amigakit have had quite a bit of bad press in the past but they've always looked after me and Chris has done a terrific job finding the fault on my ReAmiga which turned out to be a stay piece of wire under budgie!

Not sure what's going on, I've bought from RetroPassion before (slow but got there in the end and for understandable reasons) but there's a reddit thread opened up around recapping that might shed some light, and a recent spicy EAB thread (my contributions to which I regret but c'est la vie).

I've heard good things repeatedly about Mutant Caterpillar but never bought from them. Might be worth contacting a few places, see what their current workload is like. I imagine reasonable people won't want to give cast-iron guarantees without seeing the board but should at least be able to tell you how deep you'd be in the queue if yours showed up today.

Digging up old and inflammatory threads does not help matters any as it just opens up old wounds and gives some people more incentive to jump back on the attack (including the one person who was banned from EAB for just such a reason).

At the end of the day the decision of whom to entrust their Amiga repairs with rests solely with the OP - it is their money after all.

Normally I'd agree but neither of those threads are old and at the time I posted them were still active. The Reddit thread is particularly relevant to the exact question here, but RP hasn't responded in there. He did respond on the EAB thread, which is why I posted it, nothing more. We both agree on your last point, but there's nothing wrong with providing access to current discussions on the exact topic at hand.

@stevelord

Then we must agree to disagree on dragging the past back into the mainstream.

If you decide not to use one retailer or repairer over the other then that is personal choice. The OP asked for recommendation's not bad reviews made by others and then regurgitated.

Why shouldn't the OP get to hear about this? They asked for recommendations and part of that can be others anecdotal experience.

Thanks to All for the precious feedback.

As I suspected choosing seems to be a bit of a minefield...
I struggled a long time with the decision to recap since (luckily enough) all my Amigas are working without any issues.
Given what I'm reading, I'll need to decide if taking the plunge with an available UK supplier, spend quite a bit more and send it somewhere in Europe or keep waiting.
