Reliving my youth

Well Hello All.

I dont know whether or not at the age of 37 I am having a mid life crisis or what, but I cam across an Amiga on ebay and so many memories came flooding back. I always wanted an Amiga as a kid and my best mate's dad had one so we played on it a lot. These days I am more into smartphones but hey, I got all nostaligic and so here I am.
Currently I have a newly acquired used A1200 plus a CF hard drive (with everything on it).
Awaiting (in the post this week - hopefully)
a dust cover
2 joysticks (Cheetah Mach Ones - same as when I was a kid)
2 joystick port extenders
PCMCIA Adapter and CF card
Amitek Hawk 4mb Ram card

Currently the only other thing I am mulling over (apart from a new case and keyboard due to some yellowing - this will be a future project as will an accelerator card possibly) is an automatic mouse/joystick switcher.
My mate dropped over an old joystick from his Dad's loft today. all worked except could not move right. Took it to bits, reassembled it (not quite right I have just noticed) but hey, now I have full movement most of the time.
Even have grudging acceptance of the Amiga in the front room by the TV from the wife and kids!
Once its all up and running with joysticks and the ram board then I will have my brother and best mate over to relive our early youth (but plus booze this time)
Anyway, I hope to be around here a bit, so thought I should say Hi.

You never heard about RETR0BRIGHT??? Google for it, it is a child of some people right here in this very forum (me included, but the final formula is credit to Merlin).

I couldn't help but tinker even though I knew I should have waited, and tried to move one folder to somewhere else on one of the partitions. Accidentally tried to copy the level above and so now that partition has an incomplete copy_of_
folder and shows as 100% full. It also now gives a disk not verified error.

Cannot delete the folder as disk is not verified so will wait till the PCMCIA adapter turns up, hopefully copy all the normal files to it, reformat the partition and put back original files....
Might try this disk Salv thing also?

If there was a red button with the words do not push on it I am not sure I could help myself...D'oh.

I have done it myself although not with the amiga even though i had one back in the day.

I used to have a zx spectrum and never really looked at the other 2 main machines that were around at the same time. Now i have all 3 machines and really enjoy them a lot.

Whats also good is that my children (all under the ge of 5) also enjoy using them and playing on the games (mostly Manic Miner and The Great Giana Sisters)

Its a good source to show your children what you had to use and to show them that all these fancy graphics are not the be all and end all of a game.

Yes I have heard of retr0brite, but right at the moment its too much hassle and I dont like experimenting on my main kit. Now if I get a spare case etc then I can play a bit....

I have just noticed the switchers but given that there seems to be a new one for £15 from amigakit and I see references to paypal gifts in the ones here, there doesn't seem to be much advantage. As I said, I think that will be an addition at a later date.

I didnt really fix anything with the joystick that I am aware of. I just unscrewed it, looked around and put it back together again. If I do anything interesting then I will do pics.

Well. All pretty much sorted now. My cf hard drive is restored, I also have a ready to go spare/backup. I have a 4 meg expansion card fitted and working (after bending the metal lip of the motherboard cover out the way), I have a 128 mb pcmcia card setup and working for transferring adf files from pc. Only one working joystick but more on the way.

But.
Now the obsession is taking hold. Perhaps I also need an amiga with the 3.1 kickstart so as to run a later os. Perhaps I actually do need an accelerrator card not just a ram card. Perhaps......
