Just wanted to set the record straight about the "fabled" CGFX beta drivers for the Retina Z2. Yes they did/do exist. I know because I was a beta tester for RobR himself. I was on the EFNET IRC Amiga channel and was telling them how the Retina Z2 seemed pretty cool, as it allowed me much higher screen modes than the Picasso 2. Of course there was a lot of pushback about how the Retina wasn't a true RTG and you couldn't emulate AGP, etc on it. I had no interest in doing so, so that was no problem for me. I just wanted the higher screenmodes for workbench.
At any rate RobR PM'd me, and asked me if I would beta test the drivers for him. He said he asked me because he thought the Retina would be too slow for gaming, but he told me it would give me additional screenmodes, and better control over workbench graphics than the Retina drivers. He was additionally interested in whether or not CGFX driver in general would load after Softkicking into OS3.1. I told him I would be happy to do it, of course. He sent me the drivers and walked me through manually installing everything. After three tries I had it auto booting along with ReKick, and it definitely sped up Workbench, alot!
I have a hard drive from around the time this happened. I think its the actual hard drive with the drivers on it, but the motor stopped working. I tried to remove the platters from the HD and put it in another Quantum I have, but two of the screws stripped out and I will have to find time to take it somewhere to get them drilled out. I'm hoping to put the platters in an Quantum IDE drive(The HD in question is a Quantum SCSI), at which point I'm going to load everything up with WinUAE and copy the whole drive to my PC. If all works out after sifting through the data, hopefully I will have the drivers and the startup sequence to where I can distribute it with permission from RobR or someone else from the CGFX team.
Hope this sets the record straight. Oh and if anyone has a Retina Z2 sitting around I am interested in buying it, just in case this all works out.
