You can install SoftMPU to emulate intelligent MPU-401 or alternatively you can buy a Roland MPU-401 or alternative (or clone like a MM-401 which is for sale currently with the same seller as well).

Do I need that if I already have an AWE64 to connect it to?

The manual is available from Roland's website. It does however come with some literature including the MT-100's "Tone Map" which is useful for composition. I don't think those are available from Roland.
