Why is it that we are constantly running out of Harddrive space? It doesn't matter how large the harddrives seem to be when we buy them, we always seem to fill them up in a matter of months whatever their size. It is like the data expands to fill the latest larger drives as soon as we get them.

This never seemed such a problem on the Amiga. Applications and games were a couple of MB each and so you could install everything you had with ease on a 1GB drive.

But with the PC it seems to be a constant battle. In 2000 a 60GB HDD seemed huge and more than enough, but that is now really small. You can just about install Vista on a 60GB partition and live with it now!

But it's the same for storage drives too. On building a recent new main PC I installed a 120GB boot drive, 2x 500GB drives for installing games and general data, and another 1TB drive for video editing. These are already nearly full!

And my emulation system has a 120GB boot drive and 3x 1TB storage drives for my rom sets and emulators, and these are all nearly full!

And my download server is again nearly full! I need to keep seeding the popular torrents to build credit, but they are always the huge collections such as MAME CHDs that eat drive space.

And my NAS server used for my MP3 collection is almost full with only 30GB left on the 500GB drive!

So now the 1.5TB drives are looking enticing and I'm waiting for the 2TB drives to drop in price.

Are you constantly running out of HDD space and needing to juggle what is on them? And how much storage space do you have in total?

Re: Running out of HDD space!

I forgot to list my current HDD storage space.

Main PC = 120GB boot drive + 2x 500GB + 2x 1TB + 500GB external HDD = 3620GB

Emulation PC = 120GB boot drive + 3x 1TB = 3120GB

Download/Test server = 120GB boot drive + 200GB + 160GB = 480GB

NAS MP3 server = 500GB

Test PC = 60GB boot drive + 200GB = 260GB

Linux box = 200GB

Total storage space = 8180GB (about 8TB).

I think it's because the hoarding monkey is well and truly clinging onto your back.

470Gb of MP3s! Wow, That is one HUGE collection of Status Quo Albums!
I thought I had a problem with about 80Gb worth. Especially as I only ever listen to about 4Gbs of that on a regular basis.

Plus, seeing as you're a chap, I would wager that at least 25% of that is some form of Pornography. That's about 2TBs, Enough to keep even Hugh Heffner going for a week or 2. It's exhausting even thinking about it!

I am just about at 400Gb of Rock and Heavy Metal tracks, not just Status Quo though......

Is that all?
I have over 800GB of MP3s and my 1TB drive that I bought only last week is getting fuller and fuller by the minute.

... well, being as my PC is for entertainment use (mainly) as a kind of 'music system' for playing MP3s and watching videos, I'd be alarmed if I didn't have too many MP3s

Re: Running out of HDD space!

Has anyone seen how cheap 1.5TB HDDs are now? £56 for a Samsung F1 HDD!

So you can now buy 3TB of HDD space for just over £100. Now that is impressive!

The price drop is due to the new 2TB drives now out which are currently mad prices of over £160.

Re: Running out of HDD space!

As for what is actually filling up my harddrives, sadly there isn't nearly enough porn! Most if it is due to the rom collecting bug, especially when you start to obtain the ISO sets. 400GB just for my Amiga collecton alone! ;)

Actually my collection of Amiga software is only around 40Gb... Of course, I don't store ISO images, nor Demos, nor TOSEC packages.

Re: Running out of HDD space!

It's more secure than DVD-R! Unless you always use Taiyo Yuden Japanese manufactured Verbatim.

In recent tests conducted in a few different publications it was found that many DVD-R backups made 5 years ago could no longer be read as the discs dye layer had degraded and were corrupt. And the same is true of many makes of blank disc that uses purely organic dye. And it is still true today. If you want to try and ensure your DVD-R backups are more secure for the future always try and use discs that use a metal based dye. Verbatim's AZO+ dye technology ensures this as it is the best metal based dye which once burnt has reflective properties very close to a pressed disc. This also guarantees the discs will be read in a wider range of drive units from PC drives to DVD players.

As for the reliability of HDDs. I would say they are generally pretty reliable these days. However when I'm only storing something on HDD I also have a mirrored copy of the files on a second HDD. For example my NAS based MP3 collection is also mirrored on an external 500GB Lacie drive.
