I know this isn't retro, but does anyone else here own a Samsung Galaxy S Android smartphone? And have you been able to update the firmware to a newer version of Android?
My wife got one a week ago on her contract upgrades and it is still on Android 2.1 so doesn't have Flash 10.1 support for iPlayer and other apps.
I knew 2.2 was already available, and 2.3 is due very soon for UK release for this phone. After look to see what was needed I downloaded the Samsung Kies App and installed it. It said it was all installed and it then proceeded to install the device drivers. It didn't report any errors so I loaded Kies and connected the phone via the USB cable. The connecting to device spinning icon appeared and stayed spinning, never connecting.
After some digging around the program and the PS I discovered it has actually failed to install install all of the drivers, complaining 2 of them were not found. I tried to reinstall them from the option in Kies but it reported it had failed to complete the task.
After some Googling a lot of other people seemed to be having similar issues with Windows 7, so it seems Kies still isn't fully compatible. So I dug out an old laptop with Vista on it and installed Kiers on that instead. It installed OK and this time the drivers did install perfectly. I connected the Galaxy S to the PC and loaded up Kies. The software seemed to take quite a long time to find and load the device, but a few minutes later the phone appeared as connected and I could browse through all of the phone's contents. I took this opportunity to backup everything from the phone, especially pictures, as she has transferred all of those directly from her old phone and had no real backup. Anyway...
With everything backed up I went to the device info screen and it showed a newer version of the firmware was available for download Android 2.2). Success!
Or so I thought...
I initiated the firmware update, the software asked if I wanted to backup anything from the phone first, then proceeded to download the update. After this had completed it announced it would begin the firmware update on the phone. The phone instantly sprang to live and displayed the Android update yellow on black screen, as it should. The software then started to show a progress bar on the PC and everything seemed to be going OK. 2 hours later nothing had changed...
 What to do? It clearly stated don't remember the cable from the phone or close the software whilst updating, which anyone doing firmware updates on any device will know anyway. But it wasn't doing anything....
Then I noticed Kies was showing the "connecting" message with the spinning icon and not actually connecting to the phone, so the PC wasn't really connected to it or doing anything. Some digging around the software I found a message saying the firmware update attempt had failed and I needed to launch the recovering tool... :wooha:
So I followed the first step of getting the phone into recovery download move by removing the battery, putting it back in, then holding the volume down, home and power buttons all down. The yellow and black message blinked on and off. I then released the buttons and expected it to go into recovery download mode. Instead it booted fully back into Android 2.1 as it was before...
So I'm back where I started... no difference... any ideas what I can do next? I really need to get this phone updated to 2.2. This Kies software is ****. I've seen there is a manual way of doing it, but it looks a bit dodgy from the screenshots I've seen.
Anyone with ideas would be great.
