Don't know why but I find it extremely irritating, when a sitcom's leading character's first name is the same as the actor's/actress who's playing the character.

By naming the character after the actor/actress the producers/screenwriters are underestimating both the viewer and the actor/actress playing the character. I mean, do they need to emphasize that hey it's THIS person who is starring the show? Yeesh!

I honestly believe that Charlie Sheen, Fran Drescher, Melissa Joan Hart, Ray Romano and others are perfectly capable of memorizing other names than their own. :double Even Bill Cosby's character was Heathcliff Huxtable even though the show's name was Cosby Show. And what about Seinfeld. Well, I suppose it's remotely acceptable, if you're actually "playing" yourself, even though everyone else in the cast is fictitious.

This is one reason, why I don't watch sitcoms anymore.

Sorry but that is ridiculous reasoning lol to deprive yourself of great shows like Two and a Half Men just because the lead character shares the same name as the (ex)lead actor is silly. You forgot Will Smith in the Fresh Price btw, so it's nothing new :)

Denny Crane.

+1 (love that show)

there are some great sitcoms out there - well worth spending some time with -

The IT Crowd
Boston Legal
The Big Bang Theory

Okay - admittedly the first two are no longer running, but TBBT is hillarious!

I haven't watch a single TV show for at least 12 years, couldn't stand the Television back then and i sure can't stand it now. I do buy dvd/Blu Ray so i still gt to watch TBBT, Kids in the Hall, NewsRadio, Star Trek and X Files to name but a few.

After writing that i realize it has nothing to do with TV shows that have actors playing roles with the same names as themselves but i have written it now.

@-Acid- Two and a Half Men is ok show and I've catched an episode every now and then. I still feel that the producers and scriptwriters any tv-series should make a conscious effort to name characters to someone else than the actor. And yeah, I forgot Fresh Prince and probably a gazillion other series.

Nevertheless, I'd pick Frasier or Friends pretty much over anything that comes out of the tube nowadays.

Must be a U.S. thing as it doesn't seem to happen here...

This is a really odd thing to get worked up about. I don't see any reason why a character shouldn't occasionally have the same name as the actor playing the part.

And when did Melissa Joan Hart play a character called Melissa? As far as I'm concerned, she's either Clarissa or Sabrina!
