Hello

I have a sonnet quaddoubler in an a3640, I am planning to use this in my a3000. Obviously the a3000 space is quite tight. The sonnet quaddoubler has both a fan and some weird pad between the cpu that seems to have +/- power going to it.

What is this weird pad between cpu and fan? whys it powered?
Can the fan and pad be removed safely? and does this cpu run too hot to not have a fan, would a low profile heatsink suffice?

Thanks

It's a Peltier chip for Cooling and it requires power. Closest thing to liquid cooling without going liquid so its actually kind of neat. If you touch it it will be freezing cold. I'd post a link to a place that talks about it but I don't know if that would break the rules of this forum. So just do a search and you will find. You could probably run it without the fan if you use this chip as most run below freezing temperatures but this varies by chip and manufacturer..so do a little testing and see. I had a high wattage one (about 130 w) on my PC and ran it overclocked and the chip never went over 36 degrees F ( about 2 - 3 C)

Awesome answer, thanks. It is pretty cool, I thought 040 ran quite cool though. Maybe back to the drawing board about cooling this setup I guess

The 68040 CPUs are 5V and are runing hot, especially the early ones!
